Go into sleep mode or shutdown?

Well, if i am going to leave for about 1-2hours, should i put the computer to sleep mode or simply shut it down?

I was told that sleep mode warms up the computer also. So its not good to go sleep mode. Isit true?

there is nothing like sleep warms up your PC...
sleeping the computer is best for any purpose..
[i never close my laptop, either i sleep it or leave it on]
and i wud say you not to shut down the computer when its extreme... either sleep or hibernate... shutdown is like if u r gonna leave it for a month .

Sleep is great for short periods of inactivity (a few hours) for your PC.

However, prolonged and repeated sleep on a PC without the occasional properly executed cold shutdown/reboot cycles may be not be such a good idea to the overall life of your PC.

A cold shutdown/reboot is performed by

1. Shutting down your PC, turning it off and taking out the power cable from the mains.

2. Followed by holding down the power button on your desktop for 5 - 10 seconds to drain any residual energy from the motherboard and its devices

3. Reconnecting the power cable to the mains and starting up your PC again.

You can set it in BIOS settings (power managament etc.), if it's supported and mobo must feed electricity usb or ps/2 input devices when it's shutted down...

how do i know if it is support or not? I am not experience with BIOS..

I do not know your bios model but you can see "power managament" or like that in bios, set it there. It may be written "power on by mouse", you can choose it what you like.

you can search with your bios model like award or Ami etc... it is easy way for you can setup it with screenshoots...

To answer the OP's 1st question. Turn your computer off in the proper fashion. Close all programs. Start/Shut Down. With today's computers and the speed they shutdown and start up their is really no reason to do otherwise. It uses no energy if its not on. It creates no heat if its not on. A proper shutdown and start does lots of little nice things the computer likes, example it flushes the ram ect. If the 30 to 90 sec it takes to Start Up can't be endured their is more problems than a computer in ones life.
This is what I do on my computers.
1. Close all open programs.
2. Use Ccleaner for a little clean up
3. Turn the volume down
4. Start/Shut Down.
It took my longer to type those 4 things than it does to do a proper shut down.

When you put the computer to sleep, all you should have to do is move the mouse and the computer wakes up.

After a fresh install of Windows 7 I didn't have to enable anything for that to happen.

Click on Control panel => [view in small/large icons] click on mouse => [when the mouse property appear] Click on hardware => choose HID-compliant cordless mouse => Click on Properties => Click change setting => Click on power management. You can see the picture given by Shawn

There is no power management tab at all. Is there any other way to turn it off? My mouse is s PS/2 mouse by the way.

Which mode is better S1 or S3? And howcome for S1 the fan is still spinning is this normal?

I think the fan might stay on because there is still heat being generated even though it's less heat.

As for S1 or S2 I don't have an answer to that. Try it each way and see how it works.

Sometimes you have to try different settings to see what works best for you.
