I use VLC - I'm quite comfy with it since I've used it for years on Linux and have always loathed WMP on Windows.

YMMV :-)

I've used RealPlayer for years and am very happy with it. It's free, and as a huge bonus, it comes with a "Download This Video" link that allows you to download pretty much any music video, movie, or other video or audio track from the web. Very user friendly, and I also like the Playlist feature.

VLC is the best, hands down. It may not look snazzy and new-age but it will play any file type you can throw its way. (and play it correctly.)

I'll also vote for VLC but throw in a word for Shark007's Windows 7 Codecs which seem to be the only reliable way to get Windows Media Player out of the stable and give it a sporting chance.

Plays absolutely everything and free-ware.

OK then!
For movies, I use WMP12 with Shark007.net - Windows 7 Codecs - WMP12 Codecs installed. VLC is popular with many here, but on my system, it was more CPU-intensive than WMP12 with no noticeable(to me) difference in picture quality. WMP12 will play anything that I have tried to play on it, with the Shark pack installed.

For audio, it depends. For podcast aggregating, and managing my MP3 players, and sometimes just listening, I use MediaMonkey » Download (the Gold version, although most people can use the free version just fine). My lossy music files are kept in the MM library, because I won't put Lossless files on my portable players with their limited space.

My lossless library is kept in foobar2000 which has a wonderful list of components you can add to it for varied functionality.

I don't mind VLC but the skipping-delay which happens when you drag the slider bar back/forward through a movie is a tad annoying. It does play most anything but I recall having to dig up Media Player Classic for a couple of formats a while ago, e.g. rmvb. And for those flash movie snippets I used a flash player whose name I forgot (it's on another, older, laptop). I'm not picky, I'll view stuff windowed, I don't care for all that fullscreen hd crap.

Been using winamp since forever for audio but it has its quirks. I've heard about foobar but haven't gotten sufficiently annoyed enough with winamp to check it out.

Don't care about plugins (unless they're needed to open some file format) or skins, waste of time imo. When a movie is playing I don't look at the player, let alone when listening to audio.
