I got a strange folder that was downloaded to my external drive. In it there was a Setup executable, so I ran it to see what it was. (I now realize that it could have been a virus!) Anyway, it is the KB2600217 software update, which had a listing that it is an update for .NET 4.0. I tried to delete this folder, but it wouldn't let me, saying I needed to get permission from SYSTEM or something. If I had to, I would guess that it was supposed to have been downloaded to some temporary location and then run, but somehow it got put to my external drive. So my questions are how to run this, and then how to delete it! Thanks

There is probably no need to run it at all - check your Installed Updates listing and see if the update is listed there. If so, take ownership of the download's folder on the external drive, and then delete it.

I was able to delete the download (what a pain THAT was!), so that is no longer an issue. How do I access this Installed Updates listing?

OK, this is what I have for Microsoft .NET Framework 4: KB2656351 KB2533523 KB2487367 KB2468871 KB2416472 So it looks like I still need to do this update.

OK
Go to Windows Update and do a Check for Updates - does the update appear there?
try installing it from there.
If it fails, what EXACT error message do you get?

I started the Windows Update - AGAIN, it started downloading to my external drive! How do I get it to download to the proper location on my main drive? It also hangs.

Simply unplug the external drive :)
Windows will use the drive with the largest available space for temporary storage during the install phase of an update.
