GPU registering high temps at idle

Hi all
I've got 2 HD5870's in crossfire that have been running fine for about 8 months but now the fans are running very fast after boot. AMD Catalyst is reporting temps of 90-92 degrees and fan speeds of 60% when I have no applications running. I've checked Task Manager and nothing seems out of the norm ( at least checking CPU/RAM usage, that doesn't reflect on GPU usage). I've run a full AVG scan which shows no naughties so any idea's or comments from previous experiences would be appreciated

I'd do a visual inspection of the cards, look for dust and dirt on the fans and cooling systems.
If needed use compressed air to remove dust. Possibly outside your house.

After you have done as has been suggested I recommend taking a serious look at your power supply. Cheapo case doesn't tell us much. When using 2 video cards air flow and case cooling is even more important. You must be able to get the heat out of the case.

Sorry guys, not upgraded my spec for a while. Since going xFire I've invested in a CoolerMaster HAF932 case (did amazing stuff to temps all over my system according to SpeedFan). I feel this prob is software related as when I disable and the reenable Xfire, everything runs fine, yet when I reboot the temps according to catalyst (and speedfan) go crazy and the fans ramp up again.......frustrating!!!

Sorry as well, must find out how to update profile on this site. I forget the brand, but I have upgraded PSU to a quality brand 800W @ £140ish (box is in the attic but it had rave reviews). I have checked for latest catalyst version version and all is up to date. Updated PSU about 5 months ago.

  • 600 Watt or greater power supply is recommended with one 75W 6-pin and one 150W 8-pin PCI Express® power connector required (900 Watt and 2 6-pin and 2 8-pin connectors for ATI CrossFireX™ technology in dual mode)
  • HAF 932 should work quiet well.
Simple test. Take off side panel and put a fan, (house fan, window fan) blowing in the computer tower and monitor the temps. If the temps go down quiet a bit when you are using your computer as you normally would then it indicates poor air circulation through the tower and around your video cards.

Pretty sure its not airflow related as Catalyst reports 95% GPU activity when the PC is started and stays at that without any applications being opened. If I disable then reenable xFire. the problem disappears. Might try reinstalling Catalyst. Can't find anything odd if I look at the startup section of msconfig.exe either. Power supply is a 800W Coolermaster Silent Pro Gold and has been powering the GPU's for about 5 months without issue.

After disabling/enabling xFire, temps settle at 35 degrees and Catalyst reports 0% GPU activity.

Weird

Uninstalled & reinstalled Catalyst, swapped the GPU's round, still no joy. Do I need a OS reinstall??? Already checked out a beta version of Windows 8 on a virtual terminal but wasn't very impressed. Don't know if that would be a good idea right now

afaik, Catalyst Control Center (or whatever) did cause issues of various kinds, so try uninstalling it and using in its place ATI tray tools you can download from here. (yes it's not from ATI, but it's like RivaTuner for ATI cards)
