in Windows 7 starter.

It was there until today. I tried system restore to no avail.

"Group by" appears when I swap to details view but I don't want that setting.

I always use the "list" setting for files in a folder.

It is greyed out in the View dropdown menu and also in the right click context menu.

What do you reckon?

Can't find a solution here or on google.

Thanks Brink.

I've fixed it today - well windows has - by using an older restore point first tried.

It looks as though either Net Framework 2.0 or the visual C++ 2010 redistributable package
could have influenced things. They were installed as part of the procedure of installing a third party program.

In answer to your query I had 'List" selected in the 'View' menu and below it where there are the options for 'Sort by' and 'Group by', the 'Group By' option was greyed out.

If I right clicked within a 'General' folder I encountered the same thing. 'Sort by' was there but 'Group by' was greyed out. Using the' change view' more options dropdown I had list selected.

Another curio is that the font for filenames had changed and the vertical spacing between the list of files was closer than the default.

I checked for malware with hijack this, malwarebytes and online multi-av scan and nothing came up.

Anyhooo glad it is back to how I want it.
