yes because you'll need at least a 450 watt psu for a 9800gt

One warning... I have the Palit GTS 250 shown at this Newegg link, and it is not a "regular" GTS 250. It is an energy-saving, downclocked version called the Palit 250 Green. The shader clock on this model is only 1512 mhz compared to 1800-something for a normal GTS 250. The core clock and memory are also down a few percent from a standard GTS 250. I'd try to find a different model of GTS 250.

HP's most powerful computer.................until the Intel Core i9 is available :(
I will have to disagree, both cards will perform well, but the GT 220 is much better than the 9800 as you see here: Power Trip vs here: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT: supercharge your graphics horsepower with this GPU at the perfect price and performance combination.
You'll be able to play new games on medium settings on a Full HD screen.

That is so utterly wrong. A GT220 is NOT better than a 9800GT. Go look at the benchmark scores; and also go read some reviews that pit the two cards against each other. The 9800GT consistently scores significantly better in benchmarks, and runs every game at much higher framerates than the GT220 does.

The proof is in the pudding.
Go look at the numbers. The 9800GT is a more powerful card than the GT220. Period. End of story. No question about it.

What about Direct X?How it effect games?

The 250 is better than the 9800GT, as I said before, because it has higher clock speeds and more stream processors.
DirectX is... well, I could type page after page describing it, but all you need to know is higher versions of DirectX are better.
If, for example, you have an operating system that supports DirectX 10, and a graphics card that supports DirectX 10, and a game that is capable of taking advantage of DirectX 10 features, then that game will look slightly prettier/more realistic than it would if you were running a graphics card that only supported DirectX 9.

To put it simply, higher DirectX versions aren't that important as far as the actual power of a graphics card is concerned; but having a higher DirectX version can potentially make games look a little bit prettier.

Buy the GTS 250. You won't be disappointed :)

One warning... I have the Palit GTS 250 shown at this Newegg link, and it is not a "regular" GTS 250. It is an energy-saving, downclocked version called the Palit 250 Green. Ah, Nice eye, Zathras! I didn't notice that.
That particular GTS250, even with its lower clock speeds, is still a much better card than a 9800GT.

@Key4You - That Palit GTS250 that I linked to is still much more powerful/better than the 9800GT, but if you want a "full blown" GTS250, then it looks like this one is your best bet. If you don't want to spend $125 on a card, then get the Palit one - if you'd like an additional 15% or so performance increase over the Palit card, then get that ECS one that I just now linked to. They're both great cards, you'll be very satisfied with either one, but the ECS one is a bit more powerful. It's up to you, now, to decide :)

I'm not really much of a gamer, however in my current Windows 7 box, I run a 512MB 9800GTX+ and at 1920x1080, it runs Crysis, Crysis Warhead and Wolfenstein very respectably with video settings on high.

While I like the Radeon 4890, it's really in a higher price league than the GTS 250. It does have much better performance though. The GTS 250 will let you play most games at medium or high detail settings and medium resolution, for $120 or so. The 4890 will do a lot better, but it's a $200+ card. I'm not a cutting edge gamer, I think I'll wait a while and probably trade in my GTS 250 for a 4890 when the price comes down to $150 or so on the 4890.

The 4890 isn't exactly cutting edge today.

Exactly. Just decide on your own, dont take our word for it (especially mine :)). Google, BING or Yahoo!, just find a good graphics card. This tread is as loooong as Longcat.

the 1st reply made me laugh, my 8800gt holds up in all new games I have tried it on, my thoughts are the latest cards are simply ahead of their time vs software.

which is better out of the 220 and 9800gt I dont know tho. --edit-- well after reading this entire thread its clear the 9800gt beats the 220.

the 1st reply made me laugh, my 8800gt holds up in all new games I have tried it on, my thoughts are the latest cards are simply ahead of their time vs software.

which is better out of the 220 and 9800gt I dont know tho. --edit-- well after reading this entire thread its clear the 9800gt beats the 220.

When the 8800 series was relased, they we're cutting-edge. They we're the best, truly awesome. No ATI card could compare. I think its fair to say they are awesome.
