As far as I'm aware GTA IV is particularly CPU heavy. I know on my machine that no amount of changing the settings makes it run any smoother, I'm getting on average 25fps. So I assume the CPU is bottlenecking it (I'm on an Athlon II x2 2.9) Perhaps you have the same issue.

I have a new Phenom II x4 3.4 on the way so I'm hoping that will help.

It is a heavily CPU dependent game and it particularly maxes core 1, although some card settings do have a noticeable impact.

Faster cards will give you a higher overall / average frame-rate, but it still likes to plummet.

At the resolution you are using, it is definitely CPU bottlenecking.

It will, but I wouldn't expect miracles :(

Says guy who uses intel..
It will double your performance.. I have thought about buying AMD Athlon x4 3.4GHz but havent got enough money for that yet.. will see on next year..

I had some serious problems with GTA IV too..
GTA IV is originally made for Xbox 360 and PS3 and then converted to PC.. Conversion from console to PC was completed poorly so thats why you need a real super machine to play it with full settings with good FPS..
I just turned view distance as low as possible and other settings to max and it runs well now..

I've read an article somewhere that the pirated version of GTA IV has lagging issues. You sure that your GTA is legit? If it isn't, nobody can help you.

Have you tried running it in XP SP3 compatibility mode? I honestly don't know if it will help it run better, but when mine was having a few issues there and wouldn't boot at all I changed compatibility modes and managed to launch it. I've read other people say it's helped performance but I can't confirm this myself.

On my machine GTA IV ran great on Windows XP 64 bit. Then I did a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit on the same machine and now the game runs fine for a 8 to 15 minutes and it freezes up the computer completly I can't even CTRL+ALT+DEL out of it I have to reboot.

I have ran it in XP mode, as Administrator, change the affinity to 1 core, I uninstalled it from the Raid 0 disks and put it on a single disk. The problem still happens. I have used all Windows 7 drivers and all Vista drivers nothing fixes the problem. This tells me that the game is having an issue with Windows 7 not the hardware.

The game works just fine on the PC in XP and 64 bit XP the problem most of you are having is probably the same as me unless you just don't have enough machine to run it. It has very high minimum specs for a game I wouldn't have been able to play it on my old machine.

GTA 4 Minimum System Requirements

  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8Ghz or equivalent AMD Athlon X2 64 2.4Ghz
  • Memory/RAM: 1GB for XP and 1.5GB for Vista
  • Video Card: 256MB NVIDIA 7900 or 256MB ATI X1900
  • Hard Disk Space: 16GB free
  • Operating System: Windows XP SP3 or Windows Vista SP1
GTA 4 Recommended System Requirements

  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz or equivalent AMD Phenom X3 2.1GHz
  • Memory/RAM: 2.5 GB for XP or Vista
  • Video Card: 512MB NVIDIA 8600 or 512MB ATI 3870
  • Hard Disk Space: 18GB free
  • Operating System: Windows XP SP3 or Windows Vista SP1
I explained the problem I was having to Rockstar but I have not heard back from them yet when I do I will post there reply here for you if it is any help.

Here was the fix that worked for me to get it to run in Windows 7. Follow these steps for both of the GTA IV icons.

On the desktop there should be two icons one for "social Club" and one for the game itself.

Right click on one of them

Goto to properties

then compatibility tab

Now check these boxes:
1 Run this program in compatibility mode: Windows Vista (service Pack 2) Or what ever version of windows it was working for you before should work.
2 Disable visaul themes
3 Disable desktop composition
4 Run this program as an administrator

Do that for both tabs and you should be fine if your problem s a straight GTA IV windows 7 problem. I would suggest that you completly uninstall GTA IV and reinstall it then make these changes.
