Hanging Computer

Greetings,

I'm working on a Dell Inspiron 530s with Win7 Pro x64. The antivirus software I use is Avira Free Edition, and my malware solution is Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

My problem is this: After starting up the computer, it is often almost completely unusable for at least five minutes after the computer logs in. This computer has a pretty fresh install; the only programs that have been installed are iTunes, Firefox, CCleaner (which I use just for the cleanup - I don't use the registry cleaner), Avira, Office 2007, and my Dell 720 inkjet driver.

What happens is when I start up the computer, I have to wait until the network and sharing center fully connects to the network (first the blue circle, then the yellow alert of limited connection, then it fully connects. wired network), otherwise the computer lags like crazy and I cannot do administrative tasks (I can open up task manager, but the window just sits there when I punch the "show tasks from all users" button, and I get the 'you can't do this!' "ding!" noise no matter where I click). Firefox will work somewhat, but it froze when I brought up the print menu.

What accompanies this hanging is a solid HDD LED on the front of the case. With task manager open, I don't see much of any activity. The CPU doesn't go above maybe five percent, most of which runs the task manager itself. When it does return, my explorer.exe goes up to around 13-18%. I tried killing and restarting explorer.exe, to no avail.

I logged out and back in again, waiting until the network manager was fully complete. Upon logging in, I opened up the task manager again *after* the network and sharing center fully connected, and didn't see anything suspicious. I had one major hang before I got Firefox open, but I haven't had one since signing in here and typing this up.

Where should I start on working on this issue?

Thanks,

Click your start menu and type msconfig, run that program, click the startup tab

How many programs have the check next to it? IF you see any that you know do NOT need to startup when windows starts, go ahead and uncheck it and click ok, obviously a restart is required.

See if that helps at all

I disabled Adobe Reader and Adobe Manager, Adobe Acrobat, iTunes, and Quicktime, and the computer starts up immediately without any problems. The programs seem to start up just fine without the startup items, and the computer is as speedy as a Pentium Dual-Core should be.

Thanks much! I'm going to ask for this to be marked as "fixed".
