We don't know if WD can or cannot help.
We don't know what software was on the Mac.

I'd like to see if there is any data that can be recovered.

So far, it has been established that Paragon identified the partitions as HFS, but we haven't seen any data (I might have missed that)

A deep scan with test disk, might determine if there is data to be recovered. I don't see any reason (yet) to assume the data is lost.

Since Paragon can at least identify the partition.

Continue with Anshad's suggestion for the Paragon HFS+ driver.

There is also the Paragon NTFS->HFS / HFS->NTFS data loss converter

I don not know this utility, so more investigation is required before using it.
It might be a hail mary, last ditch effort. You're not at that point yet.

I agree with Slartybart a partition recovery effort should now be made once the OP completes the pending trial with Paragon HFS for Windows .

Indeed Slarty brought this issue why not TestDisk in a PM and that indeed kicked a fresh thinking.

The data now lays submerged in an unwanted format whether deliberately done or took place accidentally.

Provided that data has not been overwritten in the new format, there is a good chance for recovery.

Now TestDisk can identify both HFS and NTFS. PW can identify only NTFS and not HFS (thanks to Anshad Edavana for confirming this by experimentation)

So instead of TestDisk , why not try the Quick/Deep scan in Partition Recovery Wizard of PW?

By virtue of its being blind to HFS, PW is going to find only the NTFS partitions, and if it succeeds we may be able to rewrite the NTFS partition table and with the additional "Rebuild MBR", the drive can be restored to its original NTFS state.

Is there any hole in this strategy?

Yes, that is still a possibility -my mistake. As you all suggested, scanning for lost NTFS using PW will worth a try.

The only thing I can add is that PW sees the 2nd part as type other.

It sounds like a good place to start, see what PW turns up and use Testdisk as a fallback.

Yes, that is still a possibility -my mistake. As you all suggested, scanning for lost NTFS using PW will worth a try.

No worries, my thoughts on this is if WD has a tool or methodology - use it. They might not publicize the tool because the situation is, well, embarrassing for them.

If WD tells DH there's no hope.... we don't give up that easily .
