hard drive replacement killed the laptop?

alright, I'm posting on behalf of a friend(doing chat on facebook..), who is trying to replace the harddrive on a windows 7 laptop.

now.. installation of the new drive did not go to plan, so he tried to put the old one in, and the computer apparently took this as cause to commit seppeku if you will.

we have tried everything, up to and including testing for a bad mobo, which I suspect it is.

all he's getting is a power light, not even the screen's backlight is coming up.

attached is the system specs below.

intel dual core 1.75, 160gb hdd, 2gb ram, compaq presario cq60

no, and thats the first thing he tried even before I suggested it.

update: harddrive is loading. it just wont enter windows.

also, it is flat out refusing to load to bios.

If the new HD is a new Raw HD it won't have any Windows operating system on it.

He`s pushing the correct key to get into the bios ?

In no way simply exchanging a hard drive should have messed with the bios.

Could you elaborate on what you meant by "the new hard drive install didn`t go as planned"

hey doz, I figured these guys could help since I'm drawing conflicting conclusions here. they should have you sorted to rights if not soon, then in a reasonable timeframe.

Which hard drive are you working on, I thought we put the old one back in ?

If the new drive is being recognized then just reinstall windows on it, it is brand new correct ?

Did you make any Recovery Discs or any backups before you started this science experiment ?

Okay the idea was putting the hard drive was using into a new computer. This brought up an error that I was half expecting, with windows on the old hard drive not recognizing the new hardware. It was when I put the hard drive back into the old laptop the issues arose and the old machine refused to boot.

You can`t pull a hard drive from one machine and expect it to boot in another pc. Windows has to be installed on the hard drive while it`s installed on the new hardware. Try creating a system repair disc and run it with the old hard drive installed on the original machine, if that`s what you want to do. Or just install windows ( as stated ) on the new drive.

I didn`t think I would have to say this, but, you will have to make the cd on a working windows 7 machine, or just use the windows 7 install dvd. ( my bad, it`s late )

I ask earlier if you have made Recovery Discs or do you have an installer DVD for the version that goes with the orig HD for the Compaq CQ60 HD? If so you may have to run it 3 seperate times to get the system repaired back to where it was working in the original laptop.
