I know: it's been discussed before, and many times, but I still haven't managed to find an answer to the external hard drives and 7 question, despite hours of searching and trying.
But maybe someone on here's found a solution to the External (USB) Hard Drive (or memory card) Stops Responding When Moving Or Copying Files To It question, so thought I'd give it a go.
Anyone?

Have spent ages looking for a solution to this problem but have almost given up.
Copying or moving files, large or small, onto either an external hard drive or memory stick (basically, a usb device) quite often fail, with the result being a non responsive hard drive or mem stick. The only way 'forward' is to unplug the device. This doesn't happen with all hard drives; sometimes the transfers go without any hitches, but these are rare.
Tried the hotfix from Microsoft but it made no difference.

Windows 7;
Dual core Pentium;
2 gig of memory.

Thanks

Try a couple of things.

1) Go to Device manager, then uninstall all usb related entries. Restart your computer. Check if the problem persists.

2) Boot your computer into safe mode. Do a large file transfer to check if the problem persists.

Also, download and install the latest chipset drivers for your computer.
