I upgraded my spectrum modem and router but took off my asus router. I now have only wifi connection but cannot get hardwire. I do haev the green and orange lights on both the computer and router but no connection. I wonder when I pulled the asus router off maybe I needed to disconnect it first. Seems it's a gateway issues now.

Any idea what to look for?

Not sure what you have already tried. Did you configure your PC/Laptop for Ethernet cable connection before you removed the router? Sometimes you have to contact your ISP before they will let you configure your router to that purpose. I ran into this here, in Canada, once. They always assume you want WiFi only it seems.

NOT ENOUGH ROOM TO LIST ALL HARD DRIVES HERE. Cuts me off at 5. Did you know that if you run a network you can scan your PC for viruses via other PCs using several different virus scanners? No virus scanner gets it all. This is narrows down the window for contracting a virus. By using multiple operating systems you can use different virus scanners with no risk of conflict.

I had worked with ISP support and they said you have green light on computer and router so the computer is getting data but not connecting. I tried this:

however this does not stay fixed. Sometimes it momentary works and then breaks.

Thanks everyone, I took it over to Best Buy and they hooked up a USB Ethernet adapter and the network connected so it's a bad port. Yes, I said it was working before the new equipment but I must have been on wifi and did not see it or it broke with the new data stream coming in don't know.

Sadly the USB-A 3.0 is not as fast as the wifi so far.

Glad to hear you got it fixed. On some models if you wish to have a better network adapter you can get a card to plug directly into your PCIe. This is more common with desk top computers however. If it's a desk top and it's still under warranty I'd insist that they replace it under warranty. A sudden disconnect while running your network should NOT damage your card/onboard Ethernet and you should not be liable for that. When you stated Best Buy my spidy senses started to tingle.

Yea the tech had to go ask the manager what he thought but they did help me. I don't have room on the mother board for extra PCIe devices. I need 6 outputs for doing OBS work live streaming.

Not sure what upgrades I would want you can only get so many PCIe slots on a mother board. I don't need intranet. OBS is Open Broadcast Studio where I need multiple monitors from the computer hence the six graphic outputs.

If you're doing that much OBS and you need all those PCIe slots to do it (I am not certain that you do, but there are other ways around this) then you likely need a better system board. The one I'm using currently has 7. Here's a link to it > X99-E WS/USB 3.1 | Servers & Workstations | ASUS Canada Admittedly it is a bit dated but it serves my purpose. (No pun intended.) At any rate if this is the only way you can get your net speed and you are not satisfied with it then you might want consider upgrading. Evidently you have a broken system board if the only way you can get your Ethernet to work is via a USB dongle. If that happened to me, simply because I connected the Ethernet cable to a different data stream while the system was running, and the unit was still under warranty, I would demand that the system board be replaced. Stuff like that shouldn't happen. :-)

So I remembered I took a screen for another problem I was having on December 12th before I got the new router from Spectrum and it was on hardwire before the new device was hooked up. So either the tech was wrong at Best Buy can still work or Spectrum fried my port. I will take it in to Micro Center who made the unit and see if I can cover it under warranty.

Screen shot in notes (22-11-25 no wave form) show it was working.jpg

As for the X99E_WSUSB_31 it looks like I could use that and am asking if Micro Center can upgrade to that or get the old one fixed under warranty. Thanks for all the advise got me thinking.

Admittedly, these boards don't come cheap. The WS X299 will run considerably more. These boards are used for work stations, content creation, serious enthusiasts, and home servers. This is why they have such a huge capacity for so much RAM. There are cheaper models and Chinese knock offs but I don't recommend them. IF you can get your hands on the original ASUS X99-E WS USB 3.1 board, make sure that you have the updated BIOS. TBH this is the best system board I have ever owned and although it had a few hiccoughs when I first got it all of this got ironed out with the new BIOS and upgrading the CPU to the Intel 6900K. One thing is certain: It can do OBS. It can do almost anything you throw at it. I customized mine to run four different kinds of RAID all off the same system board. She's a beast even if she's old. Just make sure the board you buy has everything you're looking for before you pull the trigger. My board does have some limitations now. I can't take advantage of Gen 4 NVMe, for example, but it will run Gen 3 just fine. I can't use state of the art bleeding edge DDR5 RAM. It doesn't have TPM2. None of this is a concern to me because it does what I want and like you, I value my PCIe. For what you do you could also use the extra lanes because bottle necks really suck, to put it mildly. Anyway, I'm glad I could be of some help. Please keep us posted. There are many members here that can offer excellent advice and instruction.

No virus scanner gets it all. This is narrows down the window for contracting a virus. By using multiple operating systems you can use different virus scanners with no risk of conflict.

I talked to a new tech support from Spectrum and she suggested I check the network reset since I am switching routers. She was right it changed from my network name to just "network". I knew it was the change of router brand. I now have full 500 mb download.

Needed to reset network when switching routers from asus to spectrum.jpg

Seems like the ASUS X99-E WS USB 3.1 is only about $450. I do video post production with 3 or 4 4K cameras on the timeline plus effects so I need a lot of processing. I also use After Effects that needs a lot of RAM to play compositions.

That is an excellent price for that board. I would love to watch your videos of you building a system using this system board. I'm also delighted to read that you got the help you needed and I did wonder if that wasn't the issue (see my original post to you). I don't do any serious streaming myself although I have thought about trying it because I have daughters who are keen on content creation and I build PCs for them. :) I love it when a plan comes together! :-)

Off topic (slightly) but a bad USB port? Best Buy is notorious for bad service. It sounded like since you pulled the ASUS router you were still in bridging mode in the modem. This is the mode needed when an additional router is used with a modem...

USB port? You use an Ethernet port. Looks like this. Has NOTHING to do with HDMI or OBS Studio...

Yes, Ethernet ports can get fried via the modem or router if it gets a power surge or what ever or your own computer does it and sends that upstream taking everything else out. They sell devices for this but they are very expensive. The cheap ones WILL cripple your network speed.

He wasn't referring to a bad USB port. He thought he had a bad Ethernet port but yes, it was a bridging issue based on the information that he shared. That said in my two decades or so of servicing PCs I've never had an Ethernet port fail on me as a result of hot plugging or unplugging the cable with the modem on. I do it all the time. It's all light to do ;) BUT with POE I wouldn't advise doing it. Too much voltage fluctuation going on there in that regard.

That is interesting what you said about power surges. I know of someone who lost two PCs that way at once. I don't know that it happened via Ethernet but again, it only goes to show that modems and routers should run on surge protection. Ideally, a UPS would be preferable. I can't imagine running any of my PCs without it. If one is super concerned about protecting their investment and finance is not an object I recommend using sine wave; but this is optional. Most PCs are safe with standard UPS protection.

The reason OBS came into the discussion is because he's streaming with multiple cards and has no spare PCIe lanes — for example, to use with a replacement Ethernet card. (Hence the resort to a USB dongle.) No matter, the issue has been resolved and all is well that ends well.

I have to agree with you again on the matter of Best Buy. I have had more dis-service from these people than I can bring myself to express here and it has been validated in many a You Tube video how that this company will take advantage of people to sell them stuff they don't need just to "fix" a simple problem. From receiving goods not even listed on my invoice in lieu of what I ordered (and always inferior to what I ordered) to just plain old broken is only the tip of the iceberg. Technical support is a night mare. I seriously do NOT recommend this company.
