Solved Shutting off Modem and Router

Here is the situation. I am on ATT DSL with an Actiontec ADSL+ Modem and a Netgear Wndr 3700 v2 router. Normally I turn my computer off at night before bed. But I leave the modem and router on. I noticed that the internet was getting slow, so I turned everything off. After powering up the modem ,then the router ,then the computer the download speed tripled. So how often should I re-boot the modem and router?

WilliamP458, I recommend turning all three off if your not using them. when you turn your computer off, then the router and modem. I won't hurt anything when you turn them all back on. Just turn the modem on first, then the router and then your computer.

I alway turn my router and modem off when the computer is not on.
My method is.
Turn computer off and then turn the router and modem off using a surge protector.
Turn the surge protector on along with router and modem and then boot the computer.

You shouldn't have to turn the router and modem off. They are designed to be one 24/7. When using ADSL it can be slightly inconsistent and with a technology called DLM (Dynamic Line Management) the exchange on the other side may have reduced your speed in order to ensure stability over a long period of time. Rebooting the router should force a reset to the defaults hence the increased speeds. Just my rough guess, might be worth to reboot once a week. I personally wouldn't do it every evening since the exchange is smart and could interpret the disconnects as an issue with the line. Over time the exchange may reduce your speeds to try and prevent the disconnects that randomly happen (even though it is you turning the router off).

I will re-boot on Monday every week. That should be enough to keep the speed up. Thanks everyone for the input.
