Hardwire Connection Not Working?

Hello, I'm new here. And what does every noob do? Post a problem. Here's mine:

I try to connect to the internet via a hardwired connection. I.E. the Ethernet cable is plugged directly from the modem to the computer with no router between. Most of the time, though, it doesn't work. It gives me the little yellow triangle with the exclamation point on the bottom right of the screen.

If I leave the computer on all night, in the morning it will work. That's retarded. If I connect to my Windows XP laptop (directly, not wirelessly), it works instantly. If I restart my computer the connection is lost; specifically, the icon at the bottom right shows we have connection, but when we try to actually use the internet it doesn't work. After that the yellow triangle comes in.

It seems like, maybe, Windows 7 is having problems identifying the connection? I've tried this on one desktop and 3 laptops. 2 of the laptops are XP, the rest are Windows 7. (And again, the XP's work perfectly)

Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem is? Do you know how to fix it? Does this post even make sense?!?!

Your post makes sense. :D

A couple of things might be causing your problem. Your NIC is bad, you have Bonjour installed and it has created another connection or the drivers for your NIC are out of date or not for 64bit. Do you have a firewall installed?

Thanks for the answer.

I'll check Bonjour; I don't know exactly what it is except that it's important, right? How do I know if Bonjour created another connection? If this makes a difference, I did disable and reenable the connection port where the Ethernet cable goes.

What is an NIC? I'll check the drivers. (all of them just to be safe)

Also, it's not the firewalls, I've already elimated them as the problem by disabling them to see if it worked. It didn't.

Welcome to SevenForums braydog92
Have you tried to update your driver for you Internet adapter. Did you look in the device manager for a conflict. Since xp works for you that seems to rule out a bad cat5 cable. Looks like you have dell listed in your specs so I assume you have a new PC with Win 7 installed from the factory? Good luck to you with your problem and hope that your time here at SF is enjoyable to you. :D

Thanks for the help.

I'll check all my drivers to see if they're updated. I'll also check the device manager.

You assume correctly, brand spankin' new. How frustrating.

I Googled NIC. Network interface controller, is that what you're talking about?

Also, here is a little backstory to my problem: My dad owns a local Internet Service Provider called 'Tower Internet'. We are having a problem with a customer, and fortunately a friend or they'd be even more aggravated. The epuipment we use is from Ubiquiti Networks, I think. We put equipment on a local tower, i.e. a cell phone tower or something like that. Then we put equipment on a customers house that points to the equipment on the tower. It is similar to Hughes Net and Wildblue, but cheaper, faster and without a download threshold.

The customer has one Windows 7 desktop; the new Dell. They have one piece of crap XP laptop. We, Tower Internet, have one Windows 7 laptop and one XP laptop.

Interestingly enough, the Windows 7 laptop we have connects to our work network and our home network perfectly, but when we get to our irate customer's house, it has EXACTLY the same problem that their desktop has. Is it possible that the modem we use, also from Ubiquity Networks, has compatibility issues with Windows 7?

I checked and the radio we use from Ubiquity, it is a NanoStation loco M5 in case you were curious, in no way effects or is effected by the operating system of the User's computer.

From that I would say the costumers modem needs swapped with your home modem to see if thats the problem. Sounds like hardware problem not win 7 problem.

We have different ISP's. We've replaced their equipment already. We get DSL in town. They're out of town and have our service. The equipment we use has a modem, or 'brain', built in to the antannae. We configure the 'brain' before we even arrive at the customers house.

Also, the internet works seamlessly on the 2 XP laptops we've used. The two Windows 7 computers have problems connecting or recognizing the connection.

When I get a chance to check the drivers, Bonjour, and conflicts in the device manager I'll report back.

Sorry, I do have one more question. :p

I know how to get into my device manager, but how do I know if there is a conflict?

Thank you guys for all your help. It is much appreciated.

Same issue...

Braydog92, did you solve this problem? My husband also has a small wireless company, and is having the same issue. XP costomers connect fine, windows 7 will connect through the router, but not direct.
