Have 14 svchost's running, why? & what do they mean?

What are they controlling "above the code & hdwe?" I chk'd out the tutorials on svchost host as to what svcs I 'do not need or can stop to free up mem to no avail.

Just looking for some "guidance" like if you have BP 175/120 you have hi BP?
Or if you're going 75mph in a 50mph you're going to get a ticket.

As I'm not a tech, I may have to provide more info if required which I'll do.

Each instance of svchost.exe hosts one or more system services. It is not unusual to have 14 or even more instances. What you are seeing is normal and no cause for concern.

Since you have Process Explorer installed, you might want to configure it to use Virus Total. See this post.

You can change the columns shown by Process Explorer and you will see that a dozen or so copies of svchost is not unusual. The column named Command Line gives us some insight as to what each svchost process is doing.





Also, putting the mouse over the process name should bring up a tool tip with info about what each process:

Just check which services are running under each instance using Task Manager. Right click svchost and choose "Go to service
" or use other tools that do the same thing.

One more suggestion. Use Process Explorer. When you hover the mouse over tasks it shows you what the sub-processes are for that task, if any, like this:

I downloaded Process Explorer (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396) and played with for a short time, then my wife called me.

Also downloaded other stuff from technet.microsoft.com so I could further understand Windows & bookmarked the site.

Noticed you were a highly experienced Microsoft Tech so I included an image of another problem I'm having about not being able to minimize a window. No min button or grab handles. Is this solvable?
