Have You Ever Seen One of These?

This is a quiz for those of you born after 1970. Have you ever done or seen any of these, not a picture, an actual one. ==

1 = A phone with a dial, not buttons.

2 = A black and white TV.

3 = A car without power steering.

4 = A 45 rpm record.

5 = A needle for a turntable.

6 = Ever been to a double feature movie. (that's two movies for the price of one)

7 = Ever been to a record store where you can play the record before you buy it.

I thought I had more of these, but I can't think right now. Do any of you other "Mature Adults" know of any thing that they had 40 years ago that is gone now?

I'm getting old as I remember them all too well.

I also remember:

1. Red telephone boxes in the street.

2. Double-decker buses with a driver and a conductor.

3. Steam engines that hauled 15-carriage trains.

4. Brylcreem on my hair.

5. Going to school in short trousers up to the age of 12.

6. City centres that weren't pedestrianised.

7. Using heavy lead-acid accumulators to power valve radio sets.

8. Listening to Radio Luxembourg for my daily fix of rock-and-roll music.

I was talking more of the 1950s when Bill Haley (Rock Around The Clock in 1956) burst onto the scene.

It was the days when the BBC expected their radio newsreaders to wear a suit, collar and tie and flatly refused to play rock-and-roll music because "it corrupts our youth".

Radio Luxembourg was a radio station not governed by the then UK's stringent broadcasting laws and was the only way we youngsters could listen to this new, fresh music.

They had these little booths with a turntable and you could pick any record in the store, go in there and play it. Now that I think about it, those records had to get scratched with the kids fooling with them.

How about a car with trafficators instead of indicators? These were semaphore type illuminated flags mounted just behind the front doors (or in between the front and rear doors), and the relevant one would swing out and illuminate when you wanted to indicate that you were intending to change direction.

Other little things have changed (at least around here) ...


I can remember when I was a kid and my dad would stop for gas.
The guys would come out, check the oil, clean the Windshield and fill up your tank for you. No need to even get out of the car.

Now days its all self serve ..

Are there any full service gas stations left?

I don't believe I have seen that but the bright lights button used to be on the floor board.

Starter was engaged by a foot button. That was a long time ago. I have seen them but not actually owned one. My Dad and Grandad owned some of them. Used up thru the 30's at least.

I know older than your list but I thought some of our more distinguished members might remember them.

Or how about a "semi-automatic" shift car --- You put the car into 1st gear, when you got up to about 15 miles an hour you shifted into 2nd, and then as you increased your speed, at about 30 miles an hour you let up on the gas pedal a bit -- and heard a little click which meant that the car had automatically shifted into 3rd gear --- and then you could increase your speed to the full amount. That was my first car --- don't remember the year but it was a blue Dodge convertible with navy "stripes" --- very, very cool for the time. . .

I was born after 1970 (1973, to be precise) and remember everything from the first post.

I wonder if anyone remembers super-8 film though? That used to be a big hobby of mine, years ago...I was just a teenager dabbling with stop-motion animation in the 80s when film was on its way out and the video craze took off...fun days!

Sure, I remember all of those.

I also have vivid memories of having to hirie a film projector and reels of film for projecting movies onto the lounge wall. I think betamax had just been launched, but you need a trailer to hire the unit they were so bulky........

I have literally seen all those things and im just 19. stuff from like the 10's and 20's is old.

Our first black and white TV had a massive 9" screen with a big magnifying glass over it to make it look bigger,but it matched the wind up gramophone !! :roflmao:

Pebbly, we had one of those and were one of only four familes in the street to have one. When The Lone Ranger came on you couldn't hear yourself speak because of a bunch of screaming kids who had come round to watch.

Nowadays, when I watch football (soccer to you lot on the other side of the pond ) in HD colour on a 3D screen, I'm amazed to think how far and how fast technology has moved on. To think, the UK didn't get it first regular colour transmission until 1968, which if my memory serves me correctly was the tennis at Wimbledon on BBC2.

Yes it was the same for us ,We had the whole avenue round to watch the Coronation in '53 with 15 houses on the avenue at that time and only a 16'x10' room it was very crowded .
We did not get our 1st CTV 'til 1972!
