I have always deleted the old drivers first using the catalyst install manager then reinstalled the new ones. that has always worked for me .
Wishmaster , cccleaner and driver sweeper in safe mode will work just fine

Im wondering what the best means of cleaning out all ATI GPU related stuff before I switch to Nvidia?

If this uninstall method as Ive always done will be all thats needed , or,

ATI express uninstall then run Driver Sweeper in safe mode?

Or someone have a better suggestion

I would probably just uninstall the ATI ones trough device manager, uninstall the Cat package through Programs and features, install the new card and drivers..... But I'm sure someone has some elaborate uninstall procedures that they swear by.

Thats pretty much what I was planning to do.

Ive upgraded cards in that manner before, and never had a issue, although its just been an upgrade of same brand.
I just wasnt sure if Changing from ATI->Nvidia may be a bit different issue.

I don't think so, but ever since 3DFX was bought out by Nvidia years back I've always been with ATI.

Well guys , I think i licked the issue

I went and uninstalled the drivers and rebooted then used driversweeper then reboot

After all the nonsense i went on to install 11.4 here is what i got
Diamond Hd 6870 none Oc'ed and then the second one clocks bumped up to 975/1200

out of pure interest i did the benchmark on my old computer, my main machine is err laying in peices in a box right now since i blew a few things on it
q6600
4gb ddr2 1066 ocz reaper
ati 4870 1gb
gigabyte ep35c

native resolution for me is 1920x1080 for both monitors so i did max settings here



medium settings here



and 1280x1024




interesting from a comparison point of view if you look at older cards to new cards and what we gain and lose.

also tesselation disabled...tbh i don't think the 4870 can do it i'll see if i can turn it on later

'bout halfway down the page, it tells you how to scrub everything out..

That guide is old and hasn't been updated since June 2009 (Cat 9.4) - We're up to 11.4 now. Anyways the guy doesn't have a recent ATI card anymore.....

Important: This guide does not contain details on all the features in the latest Catalysts as I do not have recent ATI hardware to test the Catalysts. Therefore significant portions of this guide may be outdated or incorrect until I am able to rectify this at some point in the future.

Not too bad, but it starts to really choke w/AA and Im guess Teselation would choke it as well, if it was capable.

Yes, Im really loving it so far.
I made a thread in the GPU section showing some Metro benchies and a comparison w/my old 4890 for those interested in that sort of stuff.


Still getting used to the software/Control Panel etc.
Ive become so comfortable with ATIs CCC, its a bit strange still.

Not too bad, but a few extar things or things named slightly different. Will just take a bit to get used to.
