Solved HDD check?

Dell performed an online diagnostics of my machine and results showed I had a corrupted C active partition.

Is there a Linux/Ubuntu like tool to pick any bad sectors, (IF any) before the drive dies and lose my data?

chkdsk /r is an excellent tool to re-allot bad sectors, but back up your data first. Or a Seatools for DOS boot disk will do it too. And it may be that the drive is failing and re-allotment will not help.

Yes. It will prompt for a reboot. But back up data first, as it is destructive.

It writes a log, I believe it is in events viewer. A better way to do it is from a WinPE or WinRE boot disk, where you can observe its progress at leisure.

Also, I would recommend examining the SMART attributes. You can do that with GSmartControl, Speccy, Defraggler, etc. That's one thing chkdsk doesn't tell you.

If there are no SMART attribute errors, the next step is to run a long self-test on the drive. This can be done by GSmartControl or Seatools from within Windows.

The first test was the /R. The question is whether those minor errors tripped Dell's disk error. Can you run the Dell test again, either through the BIOS or a Windows program? If so and it comes out clean, you're probably done. If not, I would go ahead to the Long self-test. Actually I would do that in any case.

Frankly, I don't have the know how to do the test through BIOS.

Dell test results weren't detailed just "partition C corrupted."

You would have to go into the BIOS (F2 at the first Dell boot screen) and see if there's a Utilities tab from which you can launch a Disk Test.

The Long test is a function of third party software, such as Gsmartcontrol or seatools.
