Solved HDD Lost Space

Sony laptop, Win 7 HPrem, 32bit, 250GB


I have 194GB free of 223GB avail. Yesterday the computer showed 200GB free space, today back to 194GB ?

Please review above and tell me where I am losing space. I have not added nor deleted any programs / files

This article will help for both Vista and Seven.
It is most likely system restore points taking up space.
You can download and use windirstat to see what is taking the space on the hard drive

i think what you are seeing is the (pagefile) in action. unless you changed it the system manages the pagefile and may
use more disk space for it at times.

Would restore points take 6GB of space ?

did you try the link from richc46's post ? i maybe a little of both the (pagefile and system restore). you can is how much
space system restore is using by going to Control Panel \system\advanced system settings. then look under system protection.then hilite the drive and click on configure...

It occurs sometimes when you does delete big files at one time (ex: 2x 4,5Gb or 9Gb)...and the system restore had at the same time save.

Could you try:

DISK CLEANUP

Or a

DISK CLEANUP: EXTENDED

NoN - I think you are right about the cause. I deleted several large files 2 days ago and expected to see more free space.

I ran the extended disk cleanup but no change is yet noted in free space. I also did a restart. Might the free space be returned later ? Any other ideas ? Thanks !

You should use carefully CCleaner aswell to delete temp files.

Or try to create yourself a new Restore Point then re-run a simple disk clean-up to delete the previous restore point, should do the trick!

It will come again as it should normally. It is just Windows OS interpreting shiftly the amount of space available when big amount being deleted in one time.

Check your estore points (Shadowstorsge). Open an elevated Command Prompt (run as admin) and paste this command:

vssadmin list shadowstorage

Then hit Enter. The number you see behind Allocated is currently used for restore points. The Maximum will be ultimately used. The Used number is irrelevant in the context.

I do use CC Cleaner. I kinda hate to mess with the restore points unless absolutely necessary. Will the system correct itself without creating a new restore point ? Thanks !

Yes it will when Windows will finish to shift the amount of space. I know it looks terrible to hear that!

You right click on cmd (in All Programs > Accessories) and click "run as admin".

So what does that tell me ?

It tells you that 6.86GBs are now used for restore points and that the system will continue use space up to 10GBs. If you do not want to use that much space for restoe points, you can reduce the space for the shadowstorage (just let me know and I tell you how). But remember that each single restore point can use up to 1GB.

No problem. My concern was that I could not account for the space on my HDD after deletion of several large files.

I have plenty of space and an external HD for my needs, but thought I should have more free space.
Never imagined restore points took up so much space.
