HDMI and 32" monitor

I got a new pc tower yesterday but i can only connect to my monitor through vga and to be honest everything looks like a huge blur. The graphics card that came with the tower supports HDMI and i know my monitor is 1080p so i was wondering if it would be worth buying the wire that conects the two. I hear they are only around 40-50 pound.

What could i expect quality wise? Will it be a huge difference or not every noticeable.

Have you checked the resolution settings? that could be your only problem. 50 British Pounds sounds like a lot, but I must plead ignorance when it comes to the normal cost of things over there.

Resolution settings are on max. I have windows 7 do it is easy to check.

I don't mind paying the money, the whole reason i got a new pc was for storage and to be able to play games.

If you have an HDMI connection on your LCD as well, I would go for HDMI.
HDMI should give better picture quality and also audio to your LCD.

When you say huge blur, what does that mean?

• Does what you see look too large or too small?
• Or does it look like someone used a editing tool like smudge?
• Have you checked the resolution, and Mghertz?
• Have you checked all of the settings?
• Have you checked to make sure the connectors went on okay? (no bent pins)

If the card supports it you should have a connection at the back of your machine, but do you have one on your monitor.

They vary in price. You should shop around first.

I hear it depends on how the monitor, and the video card match up.
I have both on mine, but haven't tried the HDMI yet because the cable needs an adapter, and the VGA's been satisfactory for me.
Sys Specs:
Gateway HX2000 20inch TFT active matrix TN
1600 x 900 x 59 hertz

It sure is a big difference though, when I go to my XP machine with its 17" square Acer LCD. :shock:

I'll agree that even old games look awesome on my xbox when its connected via HDMI. If you can afford it, by all means go for it.

The quality from analog (vga) to digital (dvi or hdmi) is noticeable. If at all possible, you should use your dvi cable instead of the vga.

Whether or not you should buy an hdmi cable depends? The only difference between an hdmi cable and a dvi cable is that hdmi also carries audio; however, in order to take advantage of that your video card must be one that also does audio, and right now, only ATI's do that. What graphics card do you have?

You can buy an HDMI cable for £10 or less, don't be buying the gold platedones which cost a fortune as they are off no use and you will not see any difference apart from the loss of cash.

If your not using the recomended resolution that you monitor recomends and you graphics card doesn't have that resolution as a native resolution then you can create the optimal resolution yourself by going into the registry.

Here's how:

Type regedit in the Start Search menu enter the registry,

Just add a line to one of the DALNonStandardModesBCD lines within the following path.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Video\{28EB637D-0B05-40E2-9B10-67836FF468A5}\0000]


(The big number at the end before the 4 zero's is random but you should be able to find yours, if you have installed multiple versions of catalysts you will have loads of different ones so make sure you modify the correct one by looking in your catalyst control panel at the "2d driver file path" entry within "information center").

For example I have just edited the DALNonStandardModesBCD1 entry to look like the following example which added 1600x900 at 60hz.
