Hi all

I'm looking to set my PC up to play through my TV (a Panasonic TH42PX60b) via a HDMI cable, however there appears to be no sound! I have tried changing the default devices but it still won;t work!

Should the HDMI carry the signal or do I need to run a 3.5 jack as well.

Any help would be much appreciated

Cheers

Jacka

Another thing to mention. My TV does support sound over hdmi and the cable also carries sound over it.

Sound comes out from the soundcard output, so by default it's not routed through your graphics card to the HDMI out. You probably need some way of telling Win7 to route sound through the HDMI but I have no idea what that involves.

I ran into this as well, but my solution was to use the regular PC-in connection and use a stereo-to-stereo cable which I connected from the PC's sound output to the TV's sound input (so a cop-out, rather than a fix). The HDMI connection was also giving me overscan anyway and I didn't feel like fiddling around to fix that.

Yeah, I've got the overscan problem too. I just thought whilst I'm rewiring the house I'll get the cables in bedded and sort that out later.

Do you know if VGA is likely to be made redundant in the near future?

Haven't heard anything about that - it'll surely be big news, though, we should be safe for a couple more years at least. There's too many peripherals that take VGA anyway (projectors, etc), they can't simply ditch it without ample warning :)

That's good to hear!

Further question

My monitor through DVI has a resolution of 1920 x 1080. If I connect a second monitor with a VGA or SVGA, what resolution am I likely to get?

Cheers

David

I have similar problem problem about HDMI. But as my Toshiba TV have two HDMI port, one has sound routed through video in/vga sound input, other has digital input sound trough HDMI cables. But the problem I was that I got only the sound through HDMI. I did set the overscan, have it set to 1920x1080, but the video quality is not even better than direct D-SUB connection.
Now I just connect my LCD TV as D-SUB second monitor, set to extended so that I can watch movie on it while do some works with the first monitor. :D

what do resolution do you get with it!?

I'm trying to do this.

have 2 monitors up stairs on my PC and have one extend linked to my TV downstairs so I can use it

Can I connect 2 HDMIor DVI cables via a splitter to have two identical screens off the primary display? Or would that just confuse the pc?

It totally possible to do.
I only set it to 1366x769.
If you have all displays can be set to 1920x1080 then you are good to go.
But there are few basic thing we should know.
There are 4 modes in sending video signal from our PC (you can normally see by pressing start menu button +P)
1. Computer only (first monitor)
2. Duplicate (Only run with similar resolution)
3. Extend
4. Projector only
We have to make sure what is the optimal resolution of each display (best if it all have the same resolution) then if you set it to duplicate we won't have any problem with it. On setting 1 and 4 we can set individual resolution after selecting it
(but it will be back to common resolution if we set it back to duplicate).
If you use DVI splitter it will work by the same resolution. Make sure that you have good quality DVI cables if the other displays are more than 5 meters away from your PC. you have to connect it securely.
The problem is that you at the same time have to extend sound input cables (with DVI).

If you are using ATI HD series VGA card, it has additional utility to set, but I have no knowledge of it :(

Kevin

Edit: If you connect second monitor with lower resolution than your PC will pick the lower one. :)

I'm following you well!

All displays should be able to down 1920x 1080 or close to it!

Regarding my video card, i actually have on board graphic which has a DVI/HDMI/VGA.

Hopefully I can use the DVI cable with a splitter but I will then need to have a DVI to VGA cable or adapter as it will be better to plug my TV into it via VGA given the over scan issue,

I watch live internet football on a laptop plugged directly from laptop HDMI out to TV HDMI in and both audio and video are handled by the cable, no need for separate audio cable. However there may be a situation with surround sound or a separate sound system that an audio cable may be needed.

All this talk about audio, and not one person has suggested looking in the audio playback panel to see if hdmi is listed among the audio protocols.
This could simply be a matter of toggling audio settings.
You have to use one or the other though
you can't use the integrated audio while using the hdmi audio.
It must be disabled in the playback panel for the hdmi audio to start functioning.

At least this is the way it is on my system.

I've actually been into the sound settings and whilst I can choose between 3 seperate settings, two being HDMI and Nvdia High Defintion device. When I test both of these no sound plays at all. I've also tried disabling all of the devices and starting from scratch. It seems very strange that it won't work!

It must be disabled in the playback panel for the hdmi audio to start functioning. - Is this what I've mentioned above or something different?

short of stripping the nvidia drivers off your system then trying a full reinstall I'm out of ideas then.
Mine was plug in play, I just need to tell it hdmi or system audio.
