HDMI Vs DVI re: Sound

My TV has HDMI input. My Graphics card has DVI. I use an adaptor and all is fine except I have to also output sound separately to the TV. I understand DVI does not carry sound.
However, HDMI does carry sound. Are there graphics cards that have HDMI outputs that carry sound with the HDMI cable?

i think all cards that have HDMI, output sound.
so you need HDMI adapter that outputs sound.

don't know if such thing exists, though.

You would need to connect your sound card to the GPU in order to transmit sound with HDMI (I think).

Either way, a lot of newer (mostly ATI) GPUs have HDMI outputs.

Yes, what Lordbob 75 said.

A card like the 5770 will have the HDMI conncetion and the drivers for the audio portion would be installed along with with the video drivers. You'll just need to enable the sound via the sound panel.

My nvidia 460 (465?) automatically routes the computers sound out through hdmi with no setup or wiring. Was a rare "Pleasent surprise" that something just worked as you hoped it would

would it even be worth connecting the HDMI cable, or just leave it connected as DVI? i thought i read somewhere that hdmi had resolution output issues or something

If the HDMI sound is working, then the signal will still be there.... you won't be able to hear it since the monitor has no speakers

In that case just connect the HDMI cable to a source that has an HDMI input which outputs sounds - reciever, TV, monitor with speakers.

Like everything else, it depends on compatibility. There was an issue reported where certain recievers wouldn't accept HDMI inputs from ATI's video cards but I'm 99.9 percent sure that's been sorted out. But....

Yes the sound still comes out the normal sound card outputs.

DVI is normally better for computer monitors. But on televisions, the DVI usitility is sometimes very limited and the video quality very poor and so HDMI makes WAY more sense.

The Q of which one works better for your monitor is more and more blurred as computer monitors and TVs are converging at such a high rate. (Much to the suffering of anyone that does any real image work and needs a decent monitor I must add)

On an EVGA GTX460 that I just installed, it has a connector for a SPDIF cable between the sound and video cards. Since my monitor doesn't have speakers, I still have sound routed to my 5.1 speaker system, and video via DVI. I have no idea if the video would be better on HDMI, but it is the same as before I bought this video card. If the video were connected to a bigger screen than I have (23"), HDMI might be needed for a greater resolution than is available on DVI...I don't know. Yes, the video driver does install 3 HD Audio components, but obviously, I'm not using them.

Yes the sound still comes out the normal sound card outputs.

Assuming that Windows hasn't chosen to set the HDMI audio to default. If you find you have no sound but your on-baord audio is enabled, check the sound panel....
