help fixing bad stability

ran it again, same stable specs as before, only difference was i nocked down the core voltage to 1.4325, i crashed within 30 seconds of starting the test, i think i really do need that high of a voltage, or to up somthing else that i am just missing, at a multiplyer that high, i cant lower the voltage much and have much breathing room.

i dont think i will get to posting pics tonight... or i guess this morning technically to put this in perspective. if you can think of how i would get away with lowering it and getting a stable resault, feel free to shoot, but with my slight, limited working knowladge of overclocking, im finding i think i really need that voltage.

the last stable overclock i ran, you can look a few posts back, it was after it was suggested i increase the north bridge voltage, i raised it to 1.1125 ish. it worked financially at 1.450v core.

the "bios" i have, if you can call it that, is $4!T. stock bios always are. i am upgrading to a nice asus sabertooth soon, till then i am stuck having yo use overdrive... unfortunately.

so my bios calls it "Blocked"

That is the problem with OEM BIOS, not many options.

Over drive has voltage sliders, just need to figure out which one is for the CPU IMC.
Did you get any manual or have any info on OverDrive?

You'll get to have some real fun when you get the new motherboard.

Never used Overdrive but I am guessing that the CPU-NB setting would be the one labeled "Mem VIT", only thing is that just like in the crappy OEM (HP?) bios it is greyed out.

And it will be almost just as easy once you get the new motherboard as long as it has the UEFI bios. Just a matter of having a USB stick handy and you can take screen shots of it,

i love that, and i also love that asus bios interface. it will be a little while yet. is there a chance of unlocking the motherboard, it has so many restricted areas that demand a password that can only be aquierd by HP. on top of that, im not even sure it will let me OC, it just shows me my clocks in grey text

What is your cooling solution as you just have fan posted? I found that with stock cooling I shut down with much less clock than with my current.

i just upgraded to an NH-D14 less than 48 hours ago, works finominally, i idle between 29c and 31c, at full load am at only about 37c, and when OCing, have not seen higher than 51c yet

Great cooler upgrade. I have the same chip but I'm OC'g the CPU and ram so it's a whole different set up. What thermal compound did you use? I would be happy with 4.0 as with water the best I'm getting stable is 4.1 and I can push harder but like you find it will crash. The differences are not noticeable at all. I'm driven like you to push it see but in the real world of computing the added speed between stable 4.0 vs 4.1 or 4.2 isn't worth the added stress. As you've seen all chips and systems have there own sweet spot.

even if i dont notice it, im a 3d developer, and rendering times to make somthing that looks real can take hours, ever.1ghz shaves a couple minutes off


fto add, im using the noctua thermal compund as i have seen posts of people stating that there are benchmarks where it clearly outperforms arctic silver

its not a huge difference as you can see, but noctua is winning in this one, close first

this is very odd, my control bench mark, stock, pulls a score of 5588. OCd, stable at 4.0 it pulls 5559. i dont get how being stable at a higher ghz could resault in a LOWER score

My experience with the 965BE is i didn't need to tweek voltages at all it could be your over stressing the cpu

Most 965 can do 4 Ghz off stock voltage via multiplyer

I can't imagine using as much juice as you are mine never went over 1.37 on stock voltage at 4 Ghz and it stayed under 25c

I think you need to re do the overclocking but im sure the ram you have is causing the issue 10 GB of ram sounds odd i would try just using 8 and dump the 2 gigs you really won't see that much of a jump unless you are overclocking the ram as well

im getting this argument aswell, but im actually upgrading the ram to 16gb. i know it seems like overkill but untill you start seriously 3d designing its somthing hard to wrap your brain around. when an application is caching, pulling, and recaching by the thousanth of second, your ram fills up fast, and having more leaves more room for regular operations and for it to cache more and move more smoothely. i know this all sounds like it would be done on the gpu, the graphics portion is, but when you are making somthing, the graphics card is caching post render, when the information to actually create the object on the screen is all being cached in you standard ram.

i will try dropping the voltages to stock, but what i find, from several attempts earlier was that i crashed within 30 seconds of cranking it up

My experience with the 965BE is i didn't need to tweek voltages at all it could be your over stressing the cpu

Most 965 can do 4 Ghz off stock voltage via multiplyer

I can't imagine using as much juice as you are mine never went over 1.37 on stock voltage at 4 Ghz and it stayed under 25c

I think you need to re do the overclocking but im sure the ram you have is causing the issue 10 GB of ram sounds odd i would try just using 8 and dump the 2 gigs you really won't see that much of a jump unless you are overclocking the ram as well

That's probally a good reason it isn't stable also did you ever consider a bios upgrade ?

Anyway I figure you put way to much juice on that chip and you should be able to hit that stock at the door unless your board is really holding you back
i tried stock voltage (1.4v) and only upped my north bridge, from 1.1, to 1.125. and i ran it at 3.9ghz. i crashed at exactly 1 minute and 38 seconds

is all the ram the same and has there been any ram error's if you get a complete 16gb mem kit it should be consistant when you match different ram or the same ram but packaged in different boxes it can also cause bad results
