help needed, tried to upgrade from 32bit win7 to 64bit (doh)

I can't even get into command prompt to use the Diskpart Clean Command. When I boot, after setting the bios to boot from CD/DVD it goes no further than the boot screen and just tells me BOOTMGR is missing and I cant go any further.

There are other ways to wipe a drive beside Diskpart.

I'd wondering if you can boot from ANY bootable DVD, such as a Linux disc or a Memtest86 RAM testing disc?

You could have bad cables or a bad port on the motherboard.

There are all sorts of things you can do, but not if you don't have the patience.

Aww, thanks Greg,
I guess I m just tired of it and its a beautiful sunny day here and I would rather be on the beach than messing with the damn computer.
I will try all that though, if only because you guys have helped me so much, I would feel bad if I dident try.

Thanks

I'm on the Intel Support page looking at the HD, tools but im not sure which one I need for my processor.

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=18455

My Processor is...........Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5700 @ 3.00GHz

Sorry to bother you guys again, i just want to make sure i get this right.

Your specs say nothing about an Intel SSD.

Those files apply only to Intel SSD.

At any rate, one of them is a PDF for instructions and the other is the toolbox.

If you don't have an Intel SSD, you need to go to Western Digital or Seagate or whoever made your hard drive.

Your specifications say you have a "1863 GB Disk partition".

I can assure you that 1863 GB drive is NOT an Intel SSD.

Do you have another drive not listed in your specs?

You need to find out who made your hard drive, preferably the model number.

You do that by eyesight or running a program such as Speccy from Piriform.com.

Got it :)
Its a seagate....but cant find a model number....but it is plugged into a SATA 2 port.
not sure what im supposed to be downloading from the seagate web site though?

WD Support / Downloads / SATA & SAS

and as an after thought, the inside of this case has lots of space for another HD...Fan, Power pack ect.

Would we be able to figure out what is wrong with the HD if I installed an old HD I have in a clapped out 10 Year old machine?

Would we be able to figure out what is wrong with the HD if I installed an old HD I have in a clapped out 10 Year old machine?

You might be able to rule out a bad HD issue if you could swap in the old HD as a test to see if you can install Windows to it.

But a 10 year old HD wouldn't be the right type (SATA) to connect to your motherboard, so it's probably pointless.

You say Seagate, but your link is to WD.

Which is it?

HDs usually have a large label on top that gives model number, size, etc.

But------we have no particular reason to think you have hard drive issues.

It could just as easily be a bad DVD drive, a bad disc, a bad connection point on the motherboard, bad RAM, and so on.

You just have to systematically eliminate each piece of hardware as problematic. There are only 6 or 8 possible culprits.

Leaving aside the issue that we cannot see what you see and don't know what you are doing or have done.

Yep,
Well I have ruled out the bad DVD drive, because I have just been able to run from DVD the sea tools I just burnt to a disk.
Seatools for DOS tutorial

Im gonna run this test see what it finds.

I checked inside the tower and made sure all the connections where tight. Other than that i don't really know how to test the Ram, Motherboard, ect

You can't really test the motherboard without specialized tools.

You can test the RAM with Memtest86+

Burn it to a disk and boot from that disk, just like you have tried to do with the Windows disk.

Run it for 6 or 8 passes, which will take hours---let it run overnight while you sleep.

Make sure no other HD's are plugged in.

Run the Seatools Extended test. Then run Disk Check from the Win7 DVD System Recovery Options Command Line. That will clear your HD.

You can then use the Seatools CD function to Quick Wipe HD. This should force the Win7 DVD to autostart. Make sure the DVD is clean and unscratched. If there is any question about DVD burn another from latest official ISO, or write to flash stick using tool given here: Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

Then run Memtest86.

Once the hardware is cleared we will have other steps for you.

Hello again everyone,

I just wanted to update you all as you have all been so fantastic.
I dont want you to think I gave up but even after trying all your advice I was so stressed with the stupid HDD and the fatal message BOOTMRG is missing that I spent my hard earned on a new HDD.
I just fitted it and YAY !!!!!!!!!! the 64 bit version of Windows is now loading....WOOT WOOT !!!!!!!!:party:

I'm just waiting for some SATA cables to arrive to hook up the offending HD (the one with BOOTMRG message) and I will try see what is wrong. That drive was quite simply stuck at the very first screen unable to load from DVD or anything. If I can fix it I will use it just for a storage disk.

But Thank you guys....Most sincerely

Greg,
When the cables arrive I will follow those instructions. I dident realise the new Samsung HD dident come with cables so I hooked it up to the existing cables and left the seagate one in place so it would be easier to hook it up.

Really I'm too stubborn to believe that HDD is completely dead.

Thank you Sirs, (bows)
all your efforts are very much appreciated !

When you connect the old HD, try to browse in to see if the data is intact and back it up.

Then reboot the computer, tap the one-time Boot Menu key given on first boot screen, try to boot the old HD again.

If it won't boot I would wipe the old HD from Win7 on the new HD using DISKPART At PC Startup.
Then repartition in Disk Mgmt.
