help needed, tried to upgrade from 32bit win7 to 64bit (doh)

hi again,
I am booting from disk but I am unable to follow the tutorial as the loading get no further than a blue windows screen and a command propmt pop up that is called / has a file path
administator:x\$windows.~BT\windows|system32\cmd.exe

I repeat..... i cannot go any further than this command window. Nothing will load. Nothing will load from disk nor HD..... I have tried ...i really think that formatting the whole drive.....and patitions is the only way forward.

I cant even format the hard drive as it does not recognise the command FORMAT C/:
It tells me its an invalid drive specification. ??? Im totally despondent now and dont know what to to next?

PS. i even tried to run D-Ban. I booted from dvd....got the D-Ban blue screen, but when i press enter to run the program it simply just does nothing.

Thank You for that tutorial, But Im already stuck ..

A) Open the Start Menu, then right click on Computer and click on Manage.
I dont even get to load a start menu...
B) If prompted by UAC, click on Yes.


Im trying to upload some photos from my phone so you guys can see exactly what I see. (cant screen shot as nothing is loading)
But again, this is exactly what happens....
I turn on the computer, I hit F9 to choose boot from disk.
I get the blue scree that says windows is loading.
Then a command window opens......which has a strange file path name (posted above)
From there I can punch in the command "Regedit."
When i look at the registry values for windows.....it tells me "no values set"

In the command window when i type "format c:/" (or any other letter that might be assigned) It tells me it cant be found?

I know the hard drive should be good. I bought the machine only 5 months ago and i don't really do hard core gaming. I did'nt overclock or anything like that.

I just thought of another idea, since I cant format with command propmpt or the windows intall ation disk.

What will happen if i create a partition and try to load windows again but on a new partition. At the moment I can see via command prompt that I have one disk 1863GB of free space. I dont think its partitioned as windows did not create one.

How much space shall I assign to it?

You've nothing to lose and everything to gain by trying it.

If you are successful we can then use Partition Wizard to restructure your hard drive.

With 1863Gb spare, you can afford to be generous.

Windows 7 64-bit needs around 40Gb for comfort plus your applications - I'd go for 150-200Gb, but it's your choice.

All you need is "create partition primary".

The entire drive will be used for one big partition.

If i choose what you said inga, will I be able to load Win7 again and then delete/format the crap that dident install and got me in this mess in the first place?

If not .....I will assign 200 GB to the partition.....but ....I forgot how many MB to a GB ...

It's tough to follow you because we don't have pictures. I have no idea what you mean by "I up to to the stage where i choose the type of partition".

If you made a partition in diskpart, you need to choose that partition when asked "where do you want to install Windows" after you leave diskpart and go back to the install disc.

If you are still in diskpart, just enter "create partition primary" to make a partition.

You don't need to assign a drive letter in diskpart.

You don't need to mark a partition active in diskpart.

If you don't want to use the whole disc for C, then this will create a 100 gig partition:

create partition primary size=100000

We can't see what you are doing and can only guess where you are or what you are actually doing.

Have you used the "clean" command in diskpart to wipe the drive clean before you make the partition?

If your drive is full of partitions, you may not have space to make another---so you would have to clean the drive to make it empty.

Yes, Inga. I agree its difficult.. (wishes i had team viewer) ...... but I am following what you mean so I think we are both thinking on the same lines...

I did what you said and used "create partition primary" so I dont understand why it said "not enough space for this operation"

Did you read my last post?

I asked about the clean command.

Try these commands in diskpart if you want to wipe the drive:

list disk (to show the ID number of the hard disk to partition, normally Disk 0)

select disk 0 (change 0 to another number if applicable)

clean

create partition primary size=80000 (creates a partition with 80 GB space; to use the entire disk as one partition, omit the “size=value” parameter switch; use a similar command to create more partitions if needed or create in Windows 7 after installation)

select partition 1

active

format fs=ntfs quick

Um No......but im gonna do it right now

Ok I used the clean command and I got a "virtual disk service error message"
"Clean is not allowed on the disk containing the current boot system, page file, or hibernation vol

YaY ,,,,,followed your command to the letter and got a message that says
DiskPart successfully formatted the volume



What next ?

Exit disk part with the exit command.

All that has done is make a partition.

You still have to install Windows.

Which means booting from your Windows installation disc.

I am confused about whether or not you can do that.

Yes I know how to boot from disk, the problem was that windows would not load. The idea was to create a partition then hopefully get Windows to load on the partition
Inga, I need to go do some RL stuff for an hour or two...when i get back I will try to get my web-cam on this old machine so you can see my screen, perhaps via skype? Might be less frustrating.
