Hello all, hoping I can get some help from some of you knowledgeable folks here. I built a computer for my sister a few years back and she recently moved to a new home. Somewhere during her move, her operating system became corrupt, she says it happened after a critical windows update.

Anyway, I did a few things and got the system back up and running and backed up her files. The next day when her computer restarted, the OS was dead.

I have since bought a new hard drive and installed windows 7 a clean version on it, the I restored her files back on it. Everything is there but her program files, like Office her modem and router and such wont transfer. I hooked up the old HD as a second HD and can see the HD when I reboot. I can access all the files and such on the old HD, I tried to copy them and move them to the new HD, with no luck.

I then took out the new HD and reinstalled the old HD and tried the boot exe command, tried to fixMBR, tried to repaid MBR, even tried to rebuild BCD it says everything went right yet still wont boot. Yet again when I hook it up as a second HD with the new HD, I can access everything from it, but the programs to run the files

How can I get the program files from the old HD into the new HD without having to reinstall every single progarm, some I don't have the disk for and some I worry about licensing. Can I clone the old HD and move the files?

Is there any possible way to recover and move the program files and such to the new hard drive?

I very much fear that you will have to reinstall the programs. When you install a program, it creates registry entries and entries in AppData and ProgramData and such, and you can't simply copy them around like in the good old days.

There are some methods available when you can boot into old OS but in your situation it is not possible.
You can check out http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219533-troubleshooting-windows-7-failure-boot.html

Otherwise just re-install those programs (try downloading from the net, check emails for keys etc). Modem/router shouldn't need any software to function. Perhaps some drivers if it is a USB modem. For wireless or ethernet no need (just open the management webpage with your browser).

Hmm I was under the impression that there was a way to ghost the programs and move them?

There are apps that will lift progs, but you still will have to reinstall them, including supplying the license key. You might, though, use something like Produkey to probe the old install for program keys.

This refers to making and image of the disk including the OS and all applications and moving it to another disk. This is an all or nothing copy, you cannot pick out applications to be moved.

Moving installed applications from a running OS is highly problematic and what you want to do is much more difficult. This is feasible only for simple portable applications. Moving a large and complex application like Office is virtually impossible. Reinstalling the application is the only practical option.

And there are other similar apps, but as far as I know, all require a working source installation.
