Hello everyone.

I am new to this forum & am here to ask for some help.

I have 2 issues that I cannot find a resolution to.....

1) I have a drive appearing on my HDD list as a Q; drive. This drive contains 0 folders/bytes etc. When I try to remove this drive I am told I do not have permissions to change anything! (please see attached images) This drive does not appear in the list in Safe Mode?!

2) I was sent a src folder for a Java project (in Eclipse) & when I try to delete the folder I am told the file name is too long for the destination folder(please see attached image). I have renamed the folder to 1 character but still wont allow me to delete it. I have tried to delete from the command prompt aswell, without success.

Any advice/help is greatly appreciated.

Regards

The Harlequin.

1) Do you have Office 2010 installed? The Q: drive is created by Office 2010's Click-to-run technology. its the virtual filesystem used by Office 2010.

2) About that long destination name, have you checked the path to the file? The filename may be very short now but the file may actually be nested very deeply. Try cutting and pasting the file to say your desktop, then try deleting.

Hi Bill.

I dont have Microsoft Office installed at the moment, I use OpenOffice. I cant remember if I had MS Office installed on this machine at any stage.

Is there a way to remove it? (The Q: drive)

(I think that I converted the folder that I couldnt delete to the (Q) drive in order to map it to a virtual drive in order to delete it!!! - but Im not sure :o)

With regards to the folder thats too long for the destination, I have it on the desktop (just realised there are 2 folders there that I cant delete!)

I think youre right about it being nested very deeply.....

I have attached an image of the prompt & result

Do you have software like Daemontools or Clonedrive or Alcohol120 installed? These also create virtual drives.

No, I dont have any of those installed on this machine!

It's really annoying me tbh.

I'm not stupid when it comes to pc's but I'm really stumped on this one.

Even one of my lecturers had a look & he was stumped aswell!

Ok.

1) Do you have Bitlocker enabled? That sometimes creates drive Q:.

2) Does the drive show up in the Disk management window?

3) Check whether you have one or more services called "application virtualization.." running.

4) Regardless of the cause, to stop your Q drive from appearing in explorer, try the following.

Open regedit and navigate to

"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer"

Create a new 32bit DWORD and call it "NoDrives".

Set the value to "65536",

I don't have bitlocker enabled (unless it's enabled by default?)

The drive does NOT show up in the Disc management Window!

It doesn't appear that I have application virtualization running....... but I have just realised that I have a VMware service running (4 VMware services actually....VMware Authorization, DHCP, Virtual Mount manager extended & NAT!) - could these be creating the Q; drive?

I will try the regedit option this afternoon (need to go get some groceries!)

Thanks for the ongoing advice Bill :)

Thanks for this advice Bill, but when I did this, the C drive is removed from the list & the Q drive remains!

If there are any other suggestions I would really appreciate it
