What operating system was installed on the system before the problem started?

Do you have a Win 7 DVD?

win 7 home x64 was and still is the only OS

I believe it was one of a 3 licenced familey pack

yes i have the dvd but no dvd hooked up presently

Now I realize that you will not be able to use Speccy, but a help would be for more info to be in your System Specs.
Update your SevenForums System Specs
User CP (3rd item in the top menu bar) |
Your Profile | Edit System Spec (left-hand column)

Add the word laptop or desktop or netbook to the
“system manufacturer” block, for example,
Toshiba Satellite L305D notebook.

Provide full windows version info, for example:
MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

Use the “Other Info” block for Optical Reader,
Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor, etc

Scroll down and click on the SAVE CHANGES button.

Go ahead and fill out the specs as best as possible for this problem system.

Have you tried just unplugging the new drive and putting everything back to see if that still works? You might and I might have missed it somewhere in one of your responses.

yes that was the first few things i did to avoid messing up what it contains: his one and only backup. It's very sensitive data and he would likely be locked up if anyone got their hands on it I lock up the whole computer in a secured fireproof safe to be honest when I'm not actively working on it as I have no intentions on ruining a good 75 year old's man who fought for our country and practices law today! I have his entire client logs so he is shut down utill I fix, so you can see why I'm freaked out to do anything I'd normally try!

but now I am afraid plugging it back in could mess up any progress I have made.

I have reached the point where its saying ci.dll is corrupt, and after several tests I conclude it is not, and any windows boot including safe modes all end with the fivth driver CLFS.sys which takes me back to startup repair.

I appreciate the responces that help me look outside of any box I might be in as your idea...any others?

oh, and I believe the root cause is the location of the boot partition files. currently they are in my main C:/ dir with all other windows files as well as a D:/ partition I did not make, but holds all of the seemingly identical boot files, I'm guessing one points to the wrong files and is loading first. Hard to explain without telling you the history of what I have tried.

So when you just have the original drive plugged in and try to boot it up, you are getting errors? And you have tried using the System disc to do a repair install?

Could you maybe do the following...boot from your Windows 7 setup DVD to the command prompt and type bcdedit which should give you a complete listing of all the boot manager entries and how they're configured. If you can somehow cut and paste or screenshot that here, we could try to help further.

yes that is how it is now

and still loops endlessly trough startup repar console

and the dvd was removed and to be replaced with a pata similar model since it was sata as well as the main HDD and the one I introduced! I also think unplugging the dvd and replacing it with the new hdd may have started the demize of the whole thing since the dvd was probibly first in the boot order, and before it detected a new hdd, it tryed to open the dvd in a cdfs type format and subsequently switched the drive letter C: with D: and the New blank drive became C:

yes I could do that soon, but I can get to a cmd prmt from the recovery console i think that command would be valid there as well, if so I'll go try

but as to cuting from a broken computer (esp. at cmd prompt - and pasting to my current one I am using, i doubt that would be a good use of several hours, ya know, ille just see

Disconnect all hard drives except for the one hard drive with the Win 7 OS.

Reconnect the DVD.CD unit.

Power up the computer.

Immediately go into the BIOS and change the boot order to CD/DVD first.

Before exiting the BIOS, insert your Win 7 DVD.

Exit the bios.

Can you now boot from the DVD?

You do not need to do anything yet.

You can immediately terminate exit from the Win 7 DVD program.

We must be able to boot from a DVD to repair the computer.

yes i can boot from the dvd (not boot windows, but it was headed towards the startup recovery panel like usual as i shut it down) but I can boot from A cd/dvd if it were not windows dvd i assume

does my wording make sense? or need clarification?

I press a key and it immediatly fires up the dvd motor/light
starts with win 7 4-color "moving logo" as if it were booting win7 or win 7 PE
after 5 sec the loading files gray bar for system repair pops up and moves me to the startup repair screen

okay i got it...

I simply switched the sata data cords from port1 and 2 and went back to bios and made sure the dvd was still first to boot, then it worked... i don't understand why a port would change that type of boot situation? you?

Now, do you have an external USB drive?

Our objective is going to be to backup everything dear to your heart from that one and only one harddrive you have connected to the external usb drive.

After that then we will go into the repair sequence.

We will be able to accomplish these steps despite any and all problems presently existing.

Just we will need an external usb drive.

Also need to know the approximate number of gigabytes to backup, that is, 10 gb, 50 gb, 100 gb? That's just so that I can be certain that the external usb is of sufficient size.

i did that somewhat from command prompt, but I did a direct xcopy with privileges attached and so forth, also i may have missed the users/(myname) folder I just collected the main c:/folder with almost all the extremely important stuff, do you plan on doing a full wipe or jst protecting my file just incase, because, I'll take a chance to save time if they may remain unharmed (used 1/2 a 8GB flash)

Personally, I recommend doing the backup with copying the privileges. This can only produce a possible complication.

If you do a straightforward xcopy then when you get ready to restore, then restores files will have the privileges of the location to which you restore. Incidentally, this behavior is different from the way such was at one time handled by MS software.

Now that you've got the backup, we want to run thru the "perform startup repair three times" routine.
