I have a brand new Lenovo B590 with Windows 7 home premium 64. I have not been able to remove the gadget icon from the desktop. It is a black box with the white outline of a house in it and a white number one inside the house. I have removed all the gadgets one by one. I have unchecked the display gadgets box and tried remove it. I get messages that I don't have administrative privileges, but I am logged on to an administrative account.
I went to Microsoft and found the following: Option 1: Disable Windows Sidebar and Gadgets Microsoft Fix it 50906

I ran this fix and still have this black box remaining on top of all my windows.

Option 2:
Option 2: Disable Windows Sidebar and gadgets using the system registry

Target users: Advanced users and system administrators
Alternatively, users can disable Windows Sidebar and gadgets on individual systems by creating a new registry key in Registry Editor. To create and set the new registry key, follow these steps:
Note: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or view the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe.

Note: We recommend backing up the registry before editing it.
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click Continue.
  2. Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, expand SOFTWARE, expand Microsoft, expand Windows, expand CurrentVersion, and then expand Policies.
  3. Right-click Policies, select New, select Key, and then type Windows as the file name.
  4. Right-click Windows, select New, select Key, and then type Sidebar as the file name.
  5. Right-click Sidebar, select New, select DWORD (32-bit) Value, and the type TurnOffSidebar as the Name.
  6. Right-click TurnOffSidebar, and then set Value data: to 1.
  7. You must log off your system or close the sidebar.exe process after you apply this procedure.
Still it persists.

Please help me figure out how to remove it. It floats on top of everything I do. If it just stayed on my desktop, I could probably deal with that.
Thank you,
Julie

Hello Julie and welcome to Seven Forums.

A 64-bit version of Windows 7 has three folders in which gadgets could be located. They are:

C:\Users\(user-name)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets
and
C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets
and
C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Sidebar\Shared Gadgets

I have Windows 7 Pro 64-bit on my machine. I have not changed or added any gadgets. The default Microsoft provided gadgets on my machine appear in only one folder:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets

They are: Calendar, Clock, CPU, Currency, PicturePuzzle, RSSFeeds, SlideShow and Weather. If you navigate to each of the folders you could check to see if an unfamiliar gadget (other than the default gadgets) appears and try deleting it from the folder.

Did this mystery icon appear as soon as you unboxed your new Lenovo and set it up? Or did it appear at some point after you started personalizing the computer settings? Do you have a restore point from before the icon first appeared?

If you right click on the gadget, what does the context menu say. Is there a Properties option.
