Help!! trying to install hp printer

Im Having trouble installing a hp deskjet on my win7 laptop - when i plug the usb in to laptop bubble message in task bar reads: could not install drivers -

When i install hp drivers and select wireless operation im asked to insert printer usb cable to laptop to complete setup - but laptop does not recognize that ive inserted usb so the install will not go any further

Could i possibly have system files missing from laptop? as i have this printer installed on my main computer and it works fine!

Forgot to mention in my previous post that i had problems with the print spooler automatically turning itself off but it seems to have cleared now (after turning it back on a few times) leaving me with the above problems!

Some printers (brother comes to mind) require the installation of the software prior to you plugging in the cable or looking for it on the network... Download the manual and follow instructions

It may also help to read any material you still have for the printer to help get the drivers installed.

Nearly all the HP printer installations I've done worked better by leaving the data cable unplugged as instructed until prompted to connect by the software. Some did have a choice to select for connecting later.
