help updating the bios

hi all

i have purchased a new set of ram and i dont know if i will be able to overclock the motherboard i have to have their max preformance as i was advised here

and i was wondering if i could do that by upgrading the bios cos the bios i have doesnt show any memory options

the motherboard is: asus p5n-e sli and the bios version is shown in the file attached

Updating the bios on an Asus board can be difficult but may give you the option to overclock it.

If that is a pre-built, it is unlikely you will be able to overclock it (and would void the warranty if you did).

its a packard bell ipower x8610 and i want to upgrade the bios to be able to overclock the ram.
the maching is out of warrenty anyway.. no warrenty to worry about

Most pre-built computers don't let you tweak things like that to begin with. To put it another way, you might be able to successfully flash the BIOS but it is doubtful that even the new one would have RAM timing settings available. I guess their attitude is that if you can't OC it you're less likely to break something.

This is pure speculation:

It might be possible to force flash the Asus P5N SLI BIOS onto the board.

That would expand your overclocking options, if it didn't brick the board.

The performance increase may not be worth the risk of totally messing up your motherboard with a bad or wrong BIOS flash. I attached a screen shot of 2 memory tests from PassMark. (download )PassMark PerformanceTest - PC benchmark software

You can see that that on the same motherboard 1866MHz is not that much faster than 1333MHz. If you do decide on flashing your BIOS, make sure you got the right one for your board. I’ve never flash a board with the wrong BIOS but I can’t imagine the outcome will be good!
