hi any help will be greatly appreciated.
have a laptop running win 7 home 32bit,on start up it automatically goes to start up repair. i have let the startup repair run for over 24 hrs and still no success.it just keeps running with a green status bar moving.i got a bit worried that it was taking so long so i cancelled and restarted.
i then decided to run chkdsk instead through start up repair.its working but seems to hang for a long time.last night went to bed around midnight and left it running but when i got up this morning it hadnt progressed at all and is hanging at 50%.it had been running for about 16hrs total.
here is what the diskchk says.

x:\windows\system32>if exist c:\applications CHKDSK c: /f
x:\windows\system32>if exist d:\applications CHKDSK d:/f
the type of the filesystem is ntfs.
volume label is windows.

CHKDSK is verifying files <stage 1 of 3>....
144640 file records processed.
file verification completed.
291 large file records processed.
0 bad file records processed.
0 EA records processed.
44 reparse records processed.
CHKDSK is verifying indexes <stage 2 of 3>....
50 percent complete. <152561 0f 180788 index entries processed>
correcting error in index $130 for file 15630.
correcting error in index $130 for file 15630.
correcting error in index $130 for file 15630.
correcting error in index $130 for file 15630.
correcting error in index $130 for file 15630.
correcting error in index $130 for file 15630.

thats as far as it goes and just seems to hang there for hours while the cursor sits on the next line flashing.the time taken to hit 50% was veryshort.
i understand it is correcting errors but would it usually take this long?
any help or info would be greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance.

thanks skylais for the reply.
when i boot up it goes straight into windows repair enviroment but i can access a cmd prompt through the advanced recovery options.
i tried to run the scannow but it wont let me as it says that it cannot be performed as a system repair is pending.
im back to running start up repair, the last time i ran that specific scan it was over 24hrs and didnt complete.it does say on the dialogue box thats its checking disk for errors.this might take over an hour to complete.:rolleyes:the progress bar is moving so maybe its best to wait it out?

Well if it is moving, even at a slow rate it's best to wait it out.
As well to mention, you can always attempt this : http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html?ltr=R

ok its now 16 1/2 hours into the scan and still isnt complete.
i will give it another 8 to see if it does and then im going to factory reset.
has anyone else experienced such a long waiting time for start up repair to complete?.its only a 80gb machine and surely it should be finished by now?.

DO you have any clue as why your computer is stuck in this start up repair loop?
Honestly it shouldn't take more than an hour in most cases, so yes your correct about this long waiting being a issue.
If you do the factory restore, and issues occur i would be glad to assist.
As well, in the advanced system recovery options, have you given system restore a try? It's a life saver in a lot of cases.

i dont know why but it just keeps on failing to load windows and automatically boots to start up repair.
i tried to cancel the start up repair that was running and it paused and just hung there for an hour. i had to do a hard reset and reboot.
now in start up repair i cannot access reinstall windows to do a factory reset.it just hangs for ages forcing me again to hard reset.pressing f8 on start up also fails to bring me to system recovery.
i can access set up through f2 and windows boot mgr through f12,is there a way to access the factory restore setting from here?

Attempt to use f10 repeatedly on startup to see what this can get you into.
Thanks for your willing cooperation as of so far. I understand this can be stressing and tedious.
