GET YOUR THINKING CAPS ON FOR THIS ONE! :-)

I have a Acer Laptop that originally came with Win Vista. The hard drive crashed, and i purchased a new one, and installed Win 7 Ultimate. Before installing ANYTHING i flashed the latest bios and aquired the latest drivers that are available for the upgrade to 7.

Installation went perfect, no problems.

Installation completes, goes through a re-boot or two finish up. NO Problems

Start using laptop, started to install a browser, and before it could even start bang, whole laptop shutdown. tried to do the same motions3-4 times and as soon as i started bang, it would shut down.

Further diagnosis, the cooling fan is no longer running. Opened up the unit, cleaned what little dirt was on/near the fan, powered unit on with cover off, runs cool and quite. Put the bottom cover back on, powered up, and the fan even goes through a 2-4 of high speed when the computer is posting, then immediately ramps down to normal operational speed.

HERE COMES THE PROBLEM- As soon as win 7 starts to boot approx 4-8 sec into it, the fan turns off. And after a few minutes the heat buildup causes a thermal shutdown.

Here's what i've tried with no success.
- Reinstalling Windows 7, (Both Quick format and Low-level) reformatting the drive.
- Deleting and making a new partition on the drive
- Reformatting the drive
- Reinstalled Win Vista with the disk that came with the unit. the same problem happens regardless of what operating system is installed. It happens at almost the same spot on every boot up.

For example i turned the unit on, and booted into win 7 setup from the disk, i left the unit on all night, and the fan stayed on all night and i came back the next day and it was still on, and blowing cool air. All during the remaining installation process the fan continued the run. As soon as it hit a point at the beginning of the boot i mentioned before, the fan would die, and never come back on. I tried multiple reboots with the SAME exact results.

I put the computer on a box fan and left that run all night with win7 running, and came back 24 hrs later and the computer was running fine. as soon as i turned off the fan it was on. within a few minutes, thermal shutdown. I am miffed.

I have checked the bios and there are no setting to change or tweak the ACPI settings anywhere.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time and knowledge!

Same HD for all installs?

Are you using the same power profile (if laptop)?

Are you using a page file, readyboost, etc?

Is the video driver the same for all installs?
