I have been having issues mainly with Explorer, if I open more than one instance and sometimes only one instance the computer will stop and I have to manually power down to restart it, so I really need to possibly do a reinstall of the Operating System

I keep most of my data on the D: Drive which can make things easy, but as most people know certain programs love to stuff things onto the C: Drive, which is only my Operating system Drive, I don't want to lose anything that might affect programs once they are reinstalled, so what should I make sure I keep in a back up and is it best to reinstall all the programs then copy the backed up stuff or vv

Hi Bobw1951,

Welcome to SevenForums!

I have been having issues mainly with Explorer, if I open more than one instance and sometimes only one instance the computer will stop and I have to manually power down to restart it, so I really need to possibly do a reinstall of the Operating System.

Before going down the re-install route . . .

Download and run chkdsk_ALL_Parameters.bat [Option 3] from here => My Useful Batch Scripts.
Download and run SFC [Options 2 & 4] from here => My Useful Batch Scripts.

Then upload the results using the tutorial at the bottom of the above link [Upload to SevenForums] and someone will look at it for you.

There is further information in Post #1.

Depending on the above you could also perform a Repair Install.

Repair Install - Overview

A repair install differs from a clean install in the fact that it ONLY replaces the corrupted OS with a new fresh copy. This means that ALL your User Accounts, Folders, Files, Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos, Data Files, Icons, and any installed programs are left intact. It does however, delete ALL the Window updates, and could possibly affect, sounds, services, visual effect settings and device drivers by re-setting them to default [unusual though]. You cannot do a repair install at boot, in Safe Mode, using a system repair disk, or using an integrated Windows update disk. Basically, this process can ONLY be performed from within the LIVE OS.

I hope this helps!

Hi Bobw1951,

Again, no problems as per attached file.

This is the same file as you posted before. Can you please post the chkdsk log . . .

NOTE: The chkdsk log can be found in the Event Viewer:

[1] Click Start.
[2] In the search box type eventvwr.msc and press Enter.
[3] On the left-hand side under Event Viewer (Local) expand Windows Logs and click Application.
[4] On the right-hand side under the Actions pane click Filter current log.
[5] In the Event Sources: dropdown box list select Wininit and press Enter, then click OK.

You should now only see the chkdsk log files displayed from the Wininit Event Sources and the information pertaining to each of them.

Double-click Wininit => Copy [at the bottom] => Paste into Notepad => Save => and Upload to the forum for us to look at!

Upload to SevenForums . . .

This tutorial [Published by Brink] will show you how to upload the file => Screenshots & Files - Upload & Post.

I hope this helps!

Sorry Paul, that was an answer to Snick who asked me to run the sfc /scannow, checked what you asked for and could not find the log, actually when I ran the chkdsk /F option it asked me to reboot, but didn't look like it did anything before it put me back to the Log In window - I'll try it again and if it happens again, I will run it from a Command line startup

Hi Bobw1951,

Yes. I just wrote that code because it is much easier to read than the previous one. Some outputs contain long lines of data which stretch across the file and is hard to read. That code lists it all under each other and is therfore easier to read and interpret!

I have deleted the link to that file now as I will include it in the main chkdsk script at some stage!
