My lap top has been doing weird stuff so I ran sfc then chkdsk. It locked at the very end of chkdsk so I ran CrstalDisk and see a big yellow warning about "Current Pending Sector Count", the value is 1. So I have one possible bad sector, or it may be OK after it is rewritten too.

Most of what I have found about CPSC is the HDD is ready to fail, digging deeper I find that is not necessarily the case, about a 60% chance the sector well be OK and if bad, it is marked bad and reallocated. People with SMART drives what are your "Current Pending Sector Count" and "Reallocated Sectors Count" reports?

I really don't want to go buy a HDD for this LT.

I see you have a lot of WD drives. Download Data Life Guard from WD site to test and repair your drive. This is a Windows version of the Data LifeGuard Diagnostics. It will test WD internal and external drives. In additional, it can provide you with the model and serial of WD drives attached to the system.

WD Support / Downloads / SATA & SAS / WD Green / GP

Yup!

I plan on running data guard as soon as I decide what OS I want to install. I have Vista HB now, may go with Vista Ultimate...for some strange reason.

I'll bet most user well have a more "Reallocated Sectors Count" than they think. A "Reallocated Sectors Count" is a "Current Pending Sector Count" that could not be recovered. It's then remapped and listed as a reallocated sector. No reason to go buy a new drive unless you are seeing "Reallocated Sectors Count" nearing the manufacturers reported maximum, normally around 200.
