Hi 8 tape video to external harddrive

I want to copy video from my Hi 8 camcorder directly to my external harddrive. Is it possible? With the program I have now, I can burn the video to a cd first, but that would use a lot of cd's needlessly. Thanks in advanced. Jerry

I would say to just capture your footage and then copy the files you captured to your external.
Or if your external is fast enough, just capture straight to it.

thats the part that I dont know how to do. I didnt see any way to do it with that program. I can "capture" video into the program (which is Cataylst Media Center) but then the only option that I see is to burn it to a cd

When you capture the video clip it must go first to a default folder on your hard drive. It cannot be burnt direct to a CD. Look in your program for that default folder. It is possible that it uses a temporary folder. If you have captured before then it is probably captured to an AVI file. Do a search on your hard drive for *.avi and see hat that shows.

That worked. Thank you. After I captured it, I went to "My Video's " folder then "Recorded tv" and there it was. I give the credit to Windows 7 for that. I do remember now that in Vista, I had to do a search and found my video on my C:\ drive in a temp folder. Thanks again Jerry

you could use R/W CD's to re-use CD's.

There are quite a lot of devices that will take in any case Composite Video / audio (and / or s-vhs) from an external device and record directly to HDD from the device.

Even some TV cards such as a Hauppage TV card have an AUX set of inputs for composite video / audio so you can record from your device. The software will include a recording application.

There might even be some cheap hardware (usb type) that just does this functionality.

Another way which might work is if you have a DVD recorder record to it from your camcorder - most DVD recorders also have an AUX in for composite / s-vhs video / audio.

IMO this would be the best way --use DVD + RW discs so you can re-use. The DVD recorder will also allow you to create "Menus" and "chapters".

But Jimbo all the OP wanted to do was to save the video direct to his hard drive which he has now achieved.
