I have three accounts on my W64 system. Built-in Administrator which I used very long time and two normal accounts.
What I want to do is hide the Administrator account from the Welcome Screen. I dont want to disable it, because I used it already and I dont want to create a new Administrator account. The reason why I want to do this, is that Avira poped-up me a message with warning that Im using account with administrator rights, and it is not reconmend.
So, is there a way to do this?

Till XP, there used to be a reg tweak to hide user accounts from appearing on the welcome screen. If you wanted to logon using the hidden account, pressing CTL-ALT-DEL would bring up the classic login where you would need to enter both username and password. Unfortunately, that no longer works from Vista onwards.

What you can do is use the Classic login screen (so no icons), then users have to know the account name to login, which in a way is more secure. To get the Classic logon, do the following:
  • Press start
  • Type: local security policy
  • Press enter
  • Expand local policies
  • Click Security Options
  • Double-click "Interactive Login: Do not display last user name"
  • Check Enabled
  • Click OK

manhunter,

Home Premium does not include the Local Security Policy Manager so you'll need to do a registry modification to enable the classic logon.

Click on start and type "regedit.exe" withot quotes into the search field, hit enter.

Expand the registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

Double-click on “dontdisplaylastusername” in the right pane and then modify the value to “1″

As far as I know, you can not hide it. Just disable it, and enable again when needed. Here's the tutorial telling how: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/507-built-administrator-account-enable-disable.html.

Hmm, ok, but with admin account disabled, UAC will not work. Or not?

The built-in administrator account doesn't have to be enabled for UAC to work, but you need at least one normal user account with administrative rights. If you disable the built-in account, and use only standard user accounts, you have no way to enable the built-in account when needed.

When I performed this registry edit and restarted, the login screen came up as expected, but none of the correctly typed active login/password combinations will work. They all report, "User name or password is incorrect." So I am stuck at the Welcome Screen.

I should add that all Safe Mode boots go to the Welcome Screen, so this is no help. Also, although I've seem some indications that the built-in Administrator account is available in a Safe Mode Boot, when I log in with it it indicates that the account is disabled. I don't know if there is a way to enable it from the Safe Mode login screen (and Dell may have disabled the account when it set up the machine).

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Nope, not at all. Only in 7 Pro and Ultimate, for whatever bloody reason. I guess MS did not intend for people to connect Home and Home Premium to a domain.

My problem is resolved. Impossible to return to the exact status quo ante the registry change, but I got in and restored my previous settings. I used this, btw. Thanks!

I'd like to know whether hiding (by using reg hack or other way if any, using win7 ultimate) the built-in admin account and creating two standard accounts, I'll still be prompted for administrator password without any problem when using anyone of them.
It's just hidden, and enabled, it should be ok, I guess..
