Hi

Do you have any other electrical equipment, wireless router etc near your speakers? If so, try turning them off one at a time and see if there is an improvement.

high pitched noise disappeares

Confirmation: even on windows xp the noise is gone when you choose 7.1 home stereo setup instead of speakers for desktop

So I have had this problem for more than a year but is now solved. The setup is HP G61 laptop, 4-port USB hub, cheap external speakers powered from a USB port, Genius optical mouse (the culprit), Whenever I moved the mouse the high pitched sound would change, higher, lower, on-off etc. Disconnect mouse - noise goes away, reconnect mouse - noise returns. Move mouse connection to a different port and the noise is permanently gone! Suggested diagnostics: disconnect the mouse and check if the sound goes away. If "yes" then fiddle around with various USB arrangements to get the best performance. If "no" then the mouse is not the problem and you are on your own again.
