Hiren’s BootCD PE

I would like to test out the Hiren’s BootCD PE software but don't quite understand their site info very well.

1. I would like to do this from a USB, and don't know if I need their USB Creator Software or not?

2. I also don't understand the two iso downloads, one is clearly x64 on their DOWNLOAD PAGE.

3. But when I click on their USB Booting Link I see the:
Hiren's BootCD PE - ISO2USB v1.0 (x86)
Download ISO2USB.exe to your computer.

So are we not able to use the x64 iso on the first page with the USB Installer on the second page?

Thanks, Nasty

Not very straightforward is it?

This is the way i understand it-

Download the .exe and the HBCD......iso and put them into the same folder.

Insert a USB flash drive

Right click on the .exe and select run as administrator.

It will automatically detect your flash drive and the HBCD..........iso.

Click on Process. It should format your USB drive appropriately and add the .iso. (I didn't go through the Process since I only have one flash drive and it has data on it.)

Done.

Make sure that a USB boot device is ahead of a hard drive or SSD in the BIOS boot options.

The HBCDx.iso is just like any ordinary image of a bootable DVD. You can burn the .iso to a DVD to recreate a bootable DVD, or you can use something like the popular Rufus utility to convert it to a bootable USB thumb drive.

Iso2usb.exe appears to be just a copy of the Rufus utility, and should work the same way. Note it is only a utility to write the .iso to the USB stick, it is not itself going to be part of the result. The utility is a 32-bit utility (which, of course, can be run on either 32-bit or 64-bit operating systems), and has no relation to the "bittedness" of the .iso that you're writing. IOW, you can use the 32-bit utility to write a 64-bit .iso to the thumb drive.

Got it guys, thanks! I downloaded the 64bit and used the Installer on the second page and assumed as dg1261 was saying that is was pretty straight forward except for the actual Tutorial clarity. I will now see if it is both UEFI and MBR Bootable. I also assume, and may be wrong, that the installer may be creating a Hybrid Bootable device that will boot on either mbr or uefi. I will find out tomorrow and can't wait to try out such a tool packed device.

So far it definitely boots as UEFI using their tool. Shows up in UEFI List I should say. I will check if it boots MBR soon.

Hi Nasty7,

...can't wait to try out such a tool packed device.

It is indeed packed with lots of goodies. You will find however, that a lot of them are older versions compared to the current versions available now. It might be best to try them out on a test system for which you have a system image for, as some of them, if not used correctly, can cause irreparable OS damage.

Have fun!

Yes, after running it last night I was a little disappointed I could not Update anything.

The graphics were not good either due to the PE Environment, is there a way to install a graphics driver quickly?

I think I will just fall back on my Linux Bootable Options, along with some other separate tools. I was really hopeful this was going to be a really good tool. I suppose it has it's advantages but I'm not seeing them yet?

I guess there are lot's of Diagnostic tools in there though. I think they are the official ones. Some Sysinternals Tools correct? I'll need to go over it again, and hopefully someone will have some input. Unfortunately I don't know how to use most of those tools.

Yes, they can be quite useful. Just Google the software for instructions, I am sure that you will find something usable. As I said previously though, try them out on a test system for which you have a system image. It's better to be safe than sorry!

Paul Black, Those Sysinternals tools are way out of my league, I think only Aliens use those lol.

I just booted the Hirens from a UEFI Machine that was set as Legacy, so the thing boots both, as some of your already knew I'm sure.

Just found a really good use for this tool. I was trying to fix/diagnose a computer that is acting really weird. It has no HDD or OS on it, but wanted to see if I could get it working. I was trying to boot from Linux to see if all the hardware was good. I then saw that I could not get the F12 Temp Boot Order to come up no matter what I did. Reviewed all the BIOS Settings etc. I was eventually able to boot from a USB and DVD, but not in the usual way I'm used to. Had to press F1 After setting the boot device and rebooting.

The only weird thing the computer is doing aside from the weird BIOS issue, when you plug it in from a cold start, one of the Fans come on briefly. It's a desktop, and I reseated all the connectors on the MB and the RAM.

I thought I would try to Flash the BIOS as it was not acting correct IMO. The computer has no OS, and no HDD. I was in a situation where I did not want to use one of my Good USB Drives to Flash the BIOS from a DOS Prompt. I thought about Hirens as I was debating how to do this, SUPER, just booted Hirens and plugged in a spare junk USB, 256MB, that someone gave me with the BIOS exe on it. Clicked the BIOS exe and away it went, installed and verified!
