Hitachi 4TB deskstar only shows 1.7TB in Windows 7

as the title really, I have just installed a deskstar 4TB but disk management only shows it as 1.7TB
is this issue sortable?

I have converted to GUID but it still sees just 1677.90 GB

That's odd as my 1,2 and 3tb drives all show true size on my P67-i7 rig. You may have to do some partitioning to divide the drive into readable sections. I've never worked with a 4 tb drive but i can see you partitioning a couple of 2tb drives or other creative division. Bios update?

Dunno about BIOS update Im a bit afraid of doing that especially as MOBO manu says it is risky unless it is broke? Never done it before. My mobo is a Asus P7P55D-E

However the BIOS only sees the 1.7TB too ?

I understand your bios update fears as well and say that may be a last resort. You may want to double check your bios versions to the current just to know if you are current or one or two or more revisions out of date?

Read that many bios updates fix HDD size issues and other. We may be on to something here. You can also sign up and blog with other ASUS owners the the same mobo for this issue, our reach directly out to there tech support to ask this question and to build confidence to do a bios update. It's my guess that ASUS has a easy fail safe way to update the bios.

Another way around it, SATA to USB adaptor, for testing...

The drive on the label says 4TB? [just checking ]

Well, I tried switching from the SATA1-6 connectors to the SATA_E1 (whatever that is??) and it now is showing the full capacity.
Any thoughts on the above.

Without reading your manual maybe the bios issue as I mentioned and provided link to helps to read the drives capacities when plugged into your available raid port which are normally ports 1-4. Anyway good job and again you may want to explore a bios update?
