Homegroup not connecting between computers on same network

i am using win7 on my pc connected via LAN and win8 on my girlfriends laptop connected via wireless and i have been trying to connect homegroup
i made the group on my pc and when i tried to connect on the laptop it said that the computer could no longer detect the home group so i made the home group off the laptop and then when i tried to connect on the pc it said i need to be connected to a home/private network which i am as i am connected via LAN.

any solution for either option?

It sounds like you need to from a Public network to a private or Home network before the Homegroup can be created. The following link will help you do that.
