Homegroup password

I am just wondering - why would I have a homegroup password and when would you require one?

I am stuck - I am at a loss at why you would require one.

Hello Melissa,

A homegroup password is created automatically when you create a homegroup to be able to add/join other computers on your home network to it.

The homegroup password (credentials) is a security measure to prevent unauthorized access to the computers joined in your homegroup. Without the password, a computer will not be able to join the homegroup.

By default, Windows 7 automatically signs in with this password to the computers on the homegroup, but you can change this to where it requires the user to manually enter the homegroup password instead.

Can you ever change the system to having no workgroup and deleting the whole lot?

Which is the best way?

I understand it may be handy to everyone else - but it just makes life difficult.

I can see others computers - slows down the system.

I also do not know how to share - see what I am sharing as I am very new.

You are not part of a homegroup by default unless you created or joined one.

I guess at some time some one may ave created one. I see that it was created to the purpose of sharing files etc.

I do not wish for this to be happening.

Both computers have left the Homegroup at least that is what both system profiles read.

I guess I troubleshoot Workgroups - are they similar?

Sorry for starting too many forums - I guess I have got myself extremely confused and I do not wish to make a mistake.

I have done this in the past and not having the use of a computer for a while was not nice.

I consider myself with a few brain cells.

But you say in another thread that one of the computers on your network has Vista installed. That being so you cannot have a Homegroup. To create a Homegroup all the computers must have a version of Windows 7 installed!
