When you say won't work are you referring to networking the computers or the connection in general. If the connection itself doesn't work then you might have a bad router port, ethernet cable or lan port. If the network stops working then you may need to look into what differences you have set on your computer between using Wireless and LAN. Does it change network settings, etc.

When you plug into the router, do the lights on the ethernet card start blinking?

Does your router use something that may sound like "MAC Filtering"?

Plug your ethernet cable from Laptop to router and join the home group..you might say that you are in the home group already .. yes but it is recognised as a wireless connection not Ethernet..you might be asked to put the code again for the home group network ...and you might have to configure your router as well.. I dont know which router you using .

You should leave the Homegroup while connected with the wireless connection then rejoin the Homegroup using the wired connection. At that point both credentials should be stored on your machine and you should be able to use the Homegroup from either connection.
