I know this has already asked/posted but it needs to be posted again/dealt with...

I've been trying to find a way to disable/remove the taskbar thumbnail preview in Windows 7. I've google searched to death lookin for a way how but nothing.

I'm aware that there is the option to do so in gpedit.msc and in regedit (hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\Windows\DWM where it says enableaeropeek change value to 0, but i assure u those methods do not work.

any help/info would be greatly appreciated

That's unfortunately only a space saving option. It only disables the saving of the thumbnail picture for a quicker preview next time round.

Nice thought though.

@lt200420, did you restart your pc after changing the registry? Also, as far as we can tell there is no way to disable the thumbnails other than using a basic theme, or disabling transparency.

Still looking for a way to disable them myself ... :(

The ExtendedUIHoverTime hack is far from perfect, if you drag a taskbar item around and then click it, the preview thumbnail will still come back.

Anybody worked out a way to remove them for good? I'm open to running a hacked version of Explorer.exe, that's how much I hate them.

Take a holiday in North Korea and yell out something like, "The Dear Leader's mom wears army boots! God Bless America!"

No thumbnails.
LOL that should be placed in tutorial section. .

Start Menu

Search Bar gpedit.msc and press enter

In left side of Group Policy Editor
Navigate to User Configuration
Administrative Templates
Start Menu and Taskbar

Locate “Turn off Taskbar Thumbnails” in right pan of Group policy editor and double click on it.

Select Disable click apply and Press ok

Now check your Taskbar, it shouldn’t show Thumbnails Preview .

Some users report that this will not work.

It does not work. The setting even lists "Windows Vista only" next to it. It worked pre-RC, but not anymore.

The other option given in another thread is to set ExtendedUIHoverTime to a value high enough that they take a long time to appear during mouse-over, but that doesn't work in all cases, as I already noted.

The worst part is that I don't even use the "grouping" feature. I have my taskbar set to "never group" with small icons. As such, there's never more than 1 preview window to select for each taskbar item, which makes it useless.

I can see how it would be useful if you used grouping, but I don't like the grouping at all.

In Explorer.exe, I did find:
TaskbandExtendedUI

... which also appears in aero.msstyles. I'm not sure where to go with that, though.

I find it useful when you have another program open like a torrent behind say your browser, because you can just hover over the preview and will allow you to see what's going on in the other program without actually having to click on it and then you can just move your mouse back to your browser and carry on.
