Solved How can I get my screen to power on with my computer

Hi! New to the forum, so please let me know if there's a better place to ask this question.

I have a desktop that I recently set up (a couple of months ago now), and when I flash it up, the screen doesn't power on. The screen is Dynex, built I think mostly as a TV. It has an automatic power down without input. What I would really like is a screen that powers up when the computer input starts, and then powers down with the computer when I shutdown (the powering down isn't as key--a thirty second countdown when there's no input would be fine). It's a little fiddly thing, but I have a dual boot set up, and I need to stop missing the operating system selection screen because the screen doesn't power on until I manually press the power.

It seems to be a problem unique to my desktop, because when I hook this screen up to my laptop, it powers on automatically. I've tried switching the cord around from motherboard to both of my two graphics card inputs, but no dice.

If anyone on here has any insight into what might be the issue, I'd love to hear from you! Thanks!

This may work with an HDMI connection but if you're using VGA it probably won't transmit the signal.

My TV will power on when I turn on the Blu-Ray player, but not when I power on the PC connected by VGA.

Thanks Diosoth for the response! I've tried this with both VGA and HDMI cables (it was with a VGA cable that I had the screen working with my laptop). Do you also have a Dynex TV? Are you using it with default settings or are there settings I could try?

Mine is Vizio. I think the HDMI ports have to be designed to power on the TV with the device. I couldn't find any specific settings in the TV menu about it though.

My Sharp TV powers up with HDMI (Bluray) but not VGA (computer), so I'm no help there.

I don't think the computer's GPU is sending out the "power on" signal. The reason that the laptop would is because when you use the external screen, the laptop does a switch-over to the external screen on bootup. It must be sending a wake signal at the same time.

That's my suspicion as well (that it's something to do with the wake signal being sent by the computer), I just don't know how to go about sorting it out. Seems like Dynex screens have trouble, but I can't find anything specifically pertaining to this issue, so that leaves the computer not signalling properly.

I've googled till my eyes were blue, but even just using different terms helps, so if you have other ways you know to describe this kind of issue, that may also help. I'm sure someone else out there has solved a similar problem.

Dont use or know much about them up to you or someone might chip in

Change the monitor command to ON.

I use a Dynex 40 in. and I know of know whay to get the screen to come on with Windows boot. Every time I have to use the remote and turn on the screen before I boot.

If by chance I forget to turn on the screen before Windows 7 is booted all my Desktop Icons lose their arrangement.

I have tried various method of connecting the screen with same results.
I just use Video card HDMI to Dynex HDMI and things have been working great for years except I need to turn on the screen before booting. It's a lot of hard work. I have to push one button on the remote.

To answer a unasked question.
Why did I get a T.V. instead of a computer monitor years ago.
Because a 40 in. computer monitor were many thousands of dollars and the Dynex T.V. was about $500.00 and they both run HDMI from a video card.

TVs may support computers, either through built-in VGA ports or HDMI, but they are never as good as a dedicated monitor. Their range of screen resolutions, refresh rates and all that are nowhere near as good. My Gateway monitor has a glossy screen but it can change resolutions in less than a second. My TV, used for the XP computer, seems to take 2-3 seconds to change resolutions when playing games or whatever.

My (7 months old) system never turns on the monitor (a Samsung S24D590L). (An excellently sharp monitor by the way). I have to press the button on the back. It goes blank immediately but stays on-ish (its blue light blinks) for an hour or two after the computer is slept or closed down. I just accept it.

Why not just leave the monitor(s) turned on? They go into low-power mode when the computer's video drops out. Less than 1 watt of power consumption.
