Solved How can i make/install windows 7 using my external hard drive ?

ohh ic...is there a performance difference between AHCI/comparability ?
from wikipedia:
Some operating systems, notably Windows Vista and Windows 7, do not configure themselves to load the AHCI driver upon boot if the drive controller was not in AHCI mode at the time of installation. This can cause failure to boot with an error message if the SATA controller is later switched to AHCI mode. For this reason, Intel recommends changing the drive controller to AHCI or RAID before installing an operating system.

Did you change SATA settings to AHCI after installing windows? And that causes the boot failure.

===============
AHCI is separate from the SATA 3Gb/s standard, although it exposes SATA's advanced capabilities (such as hot swapping and native command queuing) such that host systems can utilize them.

Advanced Host Controller Interface - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

See also Native Command Queuing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

AHCI is default on on most machines! Don't know exactly what performance gain is. Only diskperformance gain if your disk is on heavy load with a lot of applications

yep...cause in AHCI i cant install the os at all no matter what i do ...then i decided what if i switch to comparability...then it worked changing it after os install gives me the 07B

for the person having almost same problem...what happens if you try to tap f10? it should force the option thingy with safe mode etc or start normally....if that doesn't work your netbook/notebook have hidden partition for recovery,...since its a netbook it should have one...try pressing "0" while in boot....or search ur manufacturer website/google how to restore it to default....

just wanna ask...you wanna delete XP and install windows 7/ya wanna dual boot?

This is the message you should get

I get clearly the opposite:

"'bootsect' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operational program or bach file."

just wanna ask...you wanna delete XP and install windows 7/ya wanna dual boot?

The foremost. And F10 goes into BIOS and 0 doesn't do anything.

E:\boot\bootsect /nt60 E: /force
I put more spaces in commands for visibility. Only one space is needed
it worked before so you made a typo error

In bios you can hopefully activate an option like "select boot device on start" or something like that. After activating that you can press F12 or something like that on boot and select external usb hdd.

Maybe you can select usb legacy mode in bios as some firmware can't boot from usb2.0. put it back afterwards

Yep, my bad on that. But before even though the message was corrected I got an error in the Boot Sector Manipulation Tool, which most likely is the reason why I cannot put this to work.

I'm afraid I don't. What could be the reason? Maybe I should have the external HDD empty when doing this?

the command puts the bootcode on the external. At least it should do that. Do you want to disconnect external? Then you can't do the command!

Why are you trying to install from external btw?

My notebook doesn't have disc drive player nor I have an USB pen large enough to install Windows Seven from it. I will probably have to buy one though. Thank you, anyway.

Connect the usb external temporary to another machine. Start that machine from win7 repair disk or win7 installation dvd. Or just tap F8 multiple times so you see bootmenu and can enter "recovery environment" (last option only possible if win7 is on that machine)

In recovery environment you enter command prompt and determine drive letter of partition with installation files (so now it's E but it can differ!) just do
DIR C:\
DIR D:\
etc and find the right partition
Then do this:
bootsect /nt60 Y: /force
bootsect /nt60 Y: /force /mbr
(replace Y with right drievletter)
so enter recovery environment and from there command prompt
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/668-system-recovery-options.html
Boot to the System Recovery Options screen, and select the Command Prompt option. (see screenshot below)

Now the boot commands succedeed succesfully? you used another computer and usb port. and even another bootsect.exe. Maybe this helps

I have finally found a way to make the external HDD to boot but nothing happens beside a black screen with a white bar blinking at the upper left corner. It definitely doesn't work. I will just buy an USB pen and install Win7 that way. Thank you all for your tips, I appreciate.

I thought you did change boot device order a long time ago!! Of course you have to tell bios to boot from usb drive
=================
rewrite mbr and bootsector and it will boot from usb. Is it a problem if usb externel is cleaned totally? You have the install ISO on C-drive as well I assume.

There are tools to make a usb external bootable by other tools. But they clean the drive first!
