I want to share a drive to my roommates.

I want to be able to have full access to the drive, but my roommates to only have read access.

I tried setting up using Advanced Sharing and got so far as to share the drive so that others can see it but when I try to open the drive on another computer, I get an access denied issue.

I don't know how to fix this, can someone please help me... thanks! :)

roach9,
I would check to make sure that your firewall is not on. this can prevent sharing.

Thanks,
Sarah

First, don't turn off your firewall. A properly configured firewall will not prevent access to shares. An access denied message to the share most likely isn't related to your firewall anyway. If you are using the Windows firewall, turn it back on.

Second, what computers are trying to connect to the drive - all Windows, mixture of Windows and OSX/Linux/etc?

Third, how do you have your sharing configured (advanced sharing settings)?

It's a mixture of Windows & OSX.

I didn't think it was the firewall to begin with, and it has never been on... :P

I don't have sharing configured at all at present.

I can share my folders easy, and exactly as I want to (grant read access) and share them with 'Everyone'. This is what I want with my drive. What are the proper settings in the advanced share options to achieve this?

Thanks :)

Glad you got it worked out. I experienced the same problem some time ago. Win 7 is a different animal when it comes to sharing. You have to adjust sharing AND security!
