i wanted to have the computer load essential/windows start-up files from the ssd, but anything besides that from then on i want to be put and loaded from the hdd

The whole system should go on the SSD. It is counterproductive to split parts onto the HDD. Exception could be very large games. If you have the option during the game installation, you can direct it towards the HDD.

You probably have to initialize the SSD or define an aligned active partition on it (preferable for the installation). There are some tips in the guide I made here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/149969-ssd-install-transfer-operating-system.html

Else there is also this tutorial: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/91339-ssd-hdd-optimize-windows-reinstallation.html
