How do I convert .mkv with subtitles to .mp4?

How to

So for any one who whats to know what I did, this is it.

First you'll have to download some programs
  1. Format Factory from Format Factory - Free media file format converter
  2. MKVextractGUI from Tools - Video software and downloads - VideoHelp.com
Side note: when trying to get MKVextractGUI to work open the file mkvextractgui/mkvextractgui/MKVEGUI. this will bring up a warning, click "extract all" this will bring up a window asking were you want to extract to. choose your folder and press extract. Then to open the program navigate to the new folder an open the MKVEGUI file (this should now have a green arrow by it)

Now open MKVextractGUI and open your Matroska (.mkv) file, check the subtitle subfile (should be a .ass or .srt file) choose a out put file and press extract.

So now you'll have to open Format Factory. Click the end file type you want in the left column, I suggest .avi or .mp4. This brings up a new window, press add file, open your origanal .mkv file and press the output settings botton.

Go under "Additional Subtitles" and change the value of the "Additional Subtiltes (srt;ass;ssa;idx)" to the file you extracted from the .mkv earlyer. Then change the value of the "Subtilte fFont Size (% Video Size)" to 3. press ok, then ok again, then start. And so 10 minutes later you should have a new .mp4 or .avi file ready to play!!!

I hope this helps,

(should be a .ass or .srt file)

The subtitles for the movie I have called Fat are in Fat.ass

Hahah! .ass

(Had nothing to do with it. I found it humorous. I can act 12 once in a while, right?)

Yes. More often than not we need only one subtitle and when it is a foreign language film we don't mind the subtitle being part of the frame and always on. :)

This is true!!!

You can mux in hard subtitles, but they then become part of the frame instead of a "track". MPEG4 doesn't allow for "soft" (track) subtitles. MKV, MPEG2, AVI do.

So if i just want to burn or hardcode subtitles to foreign language films can i just use Handbrake and in the subtitle section check burn in with the .srt file and thats it??

Not to... stir the waters, but this is the first time I hear about MP4 not supporting softsubs... Most of my DVD rips are mp4, and they do have soft subs AND they do display correctly.
I'm a bit old-fashioned, though xD I rip the video stream with handbrake, then use tools and/or utilities to downmix any possible 5.1 tracks to 2ch WAV, Sound Forge for editing and Winamp for encoding, VobSub to extract subs and then finally mux everything into mp4/mkv/mov/hdmov.

Yes but that's like saying you can see soft subs on an mp4 with using vlc player, and you just mentioned vobsub. We were seeing if there was a way to see soft subs in an mp4 with just a simple rip/encode preferably in WMP. And the answer is there really isn't sadly.

Should note though that mp4's that have soft subs in the file will play in itunes player but it has a shitty shade/highlight bar that goes under the subs which sucks for anything thats not 2.35 frame
