My battle with subtitles....

God I hope someone can help me... I have been working on this for hours this morning. Searching the internet, reading, trying things and cant seem to get this figured out.

How is the world do you get subtitles to work while playing MKVs in WMC? I have Haali and AC3Filter installed to play MKVs. I can right click on the Haali icon in the tray to get the subtitle options but it seems to do nothing.

Now that's in short what I am looking to do, if you want more background on my situation, unfortunately, there is a lot to it....

I went to watch a MKV of Defiance last night. It's an English movie that has some parts spoken in German, in which I would almost assume their are supposed to be English subtitles for that dialogue. I had been using the Shark007 Codec Pack for awhile with no issues and a search of how to get subtitles to work told me to click "use recommended" settings. Well once I did this my MKVs were taking forever to load and still no subtitles.

So then I start researching and after reading all the people bashing codec packs and preaching to use a cleaner set-up I uninstalled Shark007 and simply installed Haali and AC3 which seem to run all my MKVs fine. However, still no subtitles.

And at this point I am going crazy, wondering if there is something wrong with the copy of Defiance I have, and wondering if I have any other movies which should have subs at certain parts. For instance, I am pretty sure there are supposed to be subs in Borat for the times he is speaking his native tongue but I don't even have the BluRay player hooked up anymore to double check this.

Is Haali supposed to show subs? If so, am I missing something? Do I need another piece of software for this to work? ... Thanks, pulling my hair out.

i just checked defiance as i have it in my library, it does indeed have hard coded subs and they should be displaying.
if you go back to sharks 007 codecs he says this about mkv and subs...

For MKV's with subs to playback in Media Center, uninstall FFDshow (because it is included in the following suggestion), and Install the Win7codecs. If you have a 64bit operating system, you will also need to x64Components addon.

To get the MKV's with subs working in Media Center, disable the Microsoft Video decoder on the SWAP TAB of the Settings Application.

i stopped using wmc for movies after using it for several years, i discovered splash pro player,
there is a free version also, i thoroughly recommend it, cant harm to try.
